Always used a Multi-Pin. Thoughts on Single Pin?

Thought about switching to a single pin this season but ended up sticking with a multi pin. For me, eliminating as much chance of human error as I can is my goal. Having a single pin and making sure to adjust it to the right yardage (first remembering to do it, then setting it correctly) seems like unnecessary steps to me. And I'm sure there are guys that swear they've never had that issue or they always remember, but I'm not gonna chance it. Now if I had a tournament set up, totally different story.

I like the clean lines of a single pin but the lack of movement needed to change yardages if needed while a deer is in front of me that multiple pins gives.

If strictly a target bow it would be a single pin all the way but on a hunting bow (at least for whitetails) give me a good multi pin sight. I might would consider one of the hybrid sights for hunting with 2 pins for 20 and 30 then another pin for longer distances

Had a coworker that loves his HHA single pin sight, missed the biggest buck he said he ever shot at. He was watching a trail at 20 yards and the buck came through in an opening at 40 yards and he forgot to move the sight and missed low.

He stuck with the HHA after that but I do not think he has ever forgot that lesson

I just had 60X strings put on and a tune by On Target in Canton and we discussed going to a single pin because of how flat my bow is shooting now. I couldn't set a 20 and 30-yard pin because they were sitting on top of each other, honestly touching. I'm going to shoot it a while like it is and reassess the situation but I see myself buying a single pin here pretty quick.

I cant comprehend how there is an argument that a single pin sight is good in hunting situations unless you are shooting 20 to 30 yds.
When buck fever sets in, remembering to adjust wont happen. What about that movement in the stand?

I agree with everyone on here, if I had a target bow, I would but not a hunting bow.

I think the biggest argument for a single pin comes with having a clean sight picture and the ability to make precise adjustments for range. Critically important at long distance.

I don't think that those same arguments make for a great hunting sight because of the inability to adapt without movement, difficulty under pressure and the problems posed if the animal moves (range, re-dial, etc).

I think for 90% of bowhunters it is hard to go wrong with a well put together 3 pin sight.

I use one. It’s easier than people make it out to be. Very little movement and if you practice you will know most holdovers and not need to adjust for those quick moments

For some reason, all those pins on a multi-pin sight cluttered my vision, thinking and aim when shooting at actual game. A 3 pin sight might have helped but I went to a single pin sight instead. That was 3 years ago and I love it. I am far more accurate with the single pin and I like that it forces me to know the range I'm shooting.

Hunting from a tree stand, I'll set my pin at 20 and am good hooting out to 30 yards without adjusting pin. I usually won't shoot at a deer beyond 30-35 yards anyway unless the setup is perfect. I have ranged various landmarks so I can tell if I need to range a longer distance or not. When I'm hunting elk, I set up at 30 yards and absolutely adjust for anything more than 35-40 yards out.

I think it must be a sensory thing or maybe my little brain can't process all those options on a multi-pin sight when I'm excited. Even when I know the distance. The single pin forces me to know my range and it is much easier for me to overlay the single pin and focus on my target and release.

Any shot opportunity I lose because of the time it takes to make an adjustment is a trade-off I'm willing to make for now.

I will always run a multi pin sight on a bow. I know several shooters who run a single pin where you dial the pin up and down depending on the distance and range. The problem with that is dialing it in before the shot. I have a hard enough time getting to draw on an animal, let alone adding the task of reaching to the sight to dial in the distance. I run 3 pins zero'd at 30, 40, and 50 yards. On my 50 yard pin, I have a small mark for 60 yards (the pin is vertical). Anything closer than 30 I aim slightly low, which I know my hold for 15-20 yards (vertical pin also). That's an easy system for me.

I have a Black Gold Verdict Ascent 5-pin I'm selling for $175. It's still in the box but the sight tape faded and needs to be replaced.

I really enjoy the single pin set up. Seems like my view is not near as obstructed. I have never had an issue with missing a deer because of yardage with it. I Try to set my hunting areas up where I know the yardages and if a deer comes out a different yardage than what the sight is currently set at, it is real easy to change it to correct/close yardage.

I like my multi pin for hunting. Seems like single pin is just something else to mess with.

I'm late to the thread but here is my take.

I think most bad shots are from rushed shots not incorrect distance/sight pin mistakes.

I don't like the clutter of a multi pin. I don't like having to think about what pin to use.

I practice at 15 to 50 yards, Inside 35 yards I practice with my HHA set at 25 and I will vary my distance every shot and estimate the distance and hold over or under. That sight picture is very slight at my typical target range, just a little high or just a little low. On animals in the field that are always slightly moving and a heart rate increase, that is absolutely as good as using a different pin. It takes more effort and movement to pick up a rangefinder and decide what pin. I don't even bother moving the HHA dial if my estimated target is within 10 yards plus or minus of that 25 yard setting and it alway is deer hunting. I have had very good successes on deer hogs and coyotes using this method.

I can understand the argument for each, but personally I have always preferred multi pin. For most of the same reasons listed above, and if you were to break a pin in the woods you would be SOL with a single pin....I would like to try the vertically integrated multi pin sights that provide that clearer sight picture most mentioned...just my .02

I use a 3 pin .29 Sword sight on mine with no trouble at all.

I went back and forth with this for years. Then I found Option Archery! You get the best of both world's! Single pin and multi pin all in the same rock solid sight. This sight is absolutely amazing! Expensive, but well worth it in my opinion. Dan Evans (founded Trophy Taker and then sold it) founded Option as well. Highly recommend this sight.

I switched to a spot hog fast Eddie double pin for my new bow this year. Best decision for me. I won’t ever go back.

I love the idea of a single pin. But in reality I know I'd forget to adjust it with my adrenaline pumping. I've been impressed with how well those single pins perform

I have been hunting with a single pin for years, no problems yet.
