Who does “deer drives” anymore? Absolutely senseless

Horrible....so sad and completely preventable....

No good. Every deer drive I saw or took part in "Drivers" were easily spotted by their blaze orange vests. I never saw a deer wearing blaze orange!

I have hunted numerous states. Some allow shooting any deer regardless of age and or sex. This makes for less scrutiny of target. Maine and NH had such regulations. Folks 5 to 10 abreast would walk or line drive in the thickest woods and shoot deer as they flushed and crossed the line. This was their culture and an accepted practice. I Never felt comfortable in these situations. This type of activity is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Panic and over zealous players can cause these results. Something doesn't sound right with 2 dead. Really a tragic situation and something that should never never happen with trained individuals. " KNOW YOUR TARGET AND Beyond"

That's horrible.

I had gotten lazy about unloading guns getting into and out of the stand. Heard a few stories about accidents, thought of my kids and back to what I aught to be doing. Hope its a refresher and reminder for everyone. No matter your intent cant call those bullets back.

No way that should have happened, but the same can be said for most such hunting "accidents."

I can't fathom how even a single person can be mistaken for a deer and killed.... but two people, including a little girl? I just don't buy it. You kill a kid while hunting, mistake or not, I say you get the rope. If little kids lives mean so little to someone that they can't even wait to make sure what they're shooting at ... they're just worthless human beings.

“deer drives” have never made any sense to me, especially from a safety standpoint. there is no way you could get me to walk around in front of other hunters with rifles or shotguns. how stupid.

I get nerded out big time when we go BUT I’m telling you no matter what we are safe

She hasn’t got to shoot more than several because of my “rules”

And I get bothered sometimes thinking, if that were me alone...dead deer

She will carry those rules along I hope

This is the first time I've heard of multiple fatalities from a single accidental shooting. I can remember when that guy went crazy up north somewhere and shot several people but of course that was intentional.

Might have been two quick shots with buck loads.

Definitely a case where accountability is a must. I've never agreed with letting people get off without jail time on the premise they've suffered enough by shooting a family member. Jail time should be as much if not more a deterrent towards others as it is accountability for the actions taken by the shooter.

These are NOT hunting accidents!!! The shooter intentionally pulled the trigger believing his target were deer. Hunting shooting accidents are rifles firing when dropped, dry firing to relax the firing pin after a hunt forgetting there was still a round in the chamber, a clothing item engaging the trigger, etc, etc, etc...not firing a deadly weapon at movement.

I'm a retired LEO, and if this case was in my jurisdiction back in the day, I'd do what I could to have had the DA go full bore after this AH! I only hope charges will be worked up and indictments handed out on this and similar cases.

If I couldn't shoot the several bucks I saw in the Sam Houston National Forest this year because of the antler restriction, they can add into statute for it to be criminal to injure or kill while intentionally shooting at an animal believed to have been prey animals. I'm not talking about ricochets or someone stepping into the line of fire, etc.

I fully agree Ftttu. My prayers go out to the family of such a senseless death. This should never happen.
I was part of a hunting safety course that had 28 students 26 of them dry fired a 30/30. Only two was able to let the hammer down without dry firing. Thank goodness for hunting safety courses because it would be much worse. But you still have idiots that should never be allowed to carry a gun.

I agree totally senseless and terrible that a little girl lost her life and the shooter is majority to blame, but if you're stupid enough to participate in a "deer drive" you should understand there's a chance of getting shot. Sad deal, but be smart when firearms are involved.

In my experience...most hunting accidents are totally senseless. That's why we call them accidents.
