I got rid of my cheap sub $100 Academy one several years back but am looking at buying another one..
normal deal, 4-5 deer a year

like to stay around 300, looking at the LEM #8 and Cabelas unit, both .5 hp

want a good one that will last and work well

Take a look at Weston grinders too. I have an older model that you can't slow down - well built. Whichever brand you go with, I would recommend going with a 1hp.

I have a 1HP LEM that is over 8 years old and I do 6-7 animals per year with it. It has been a good product. A good friend has the 3/4 HP LEM he got when I got mine, and it is great as well.

After Hobart, Weston is one of the best. I wanted a Weston but never found one under $400. I bought the LEM Big Bite #12 3/4hp and it has been very, very good. Academy will likely close them out starting any day. Last year several members found them for $199. Keep your eyes peeled, Op.

I got to start looking for this. I'm still grinding deer with a kitchen aid attachment. We eat a lot of steaks and roasts...

I believe the Cabela's Carnivore 1/2 horse has a #12 grinder. The bigger throat allows you to cut your meat up in larger chunks which saves time. That is the one I would go with and I don't think you will be disappointed. Not sure if they still do, but Weston used to make the grinders for Cabela's. I have had my Cabela's Commercial grade #22 for 10 years and i have ground 8 to 10 deer per year for sausage and burger. Still works great.

I have a #12 Gander Mountain 3/4 hp. Works great. Like most products, you get what you pay for.

We used to make a lot of sausage. Buying pork butts when on sale and grinding them up using a hand crank grinder, a #10 is passable, but working with the #32 is like using an electric grinder. With one cranking and the other stuffing the grinder you can grind a lot of pork, but with a #10, the cranking person would be worn out in no time.

Look for sales they happen up

I lucked out big time, one of the members on here a while back shared that the now closed Academy Outlet store on Forest lane had a sale on them. I went down there and they had it priced at $100.00, the ironic thing about it was two guys were looking at it first, they walked away and I grabbed it up

A few minutes after I had it in my cart they came back to that spot I guess thinking about it again confused2

Our old grinder had some issues last week and the manufacturer was no longer making or selling parts for our model. We had meat thawed and seasoned so action had to be taken we stuck it in the beer fridge in the garage and went shopping.

Looked for the LEM's at academy but none of our local academys had them in stock ended up running up to bass pro and picking up a 1.5 HP carnivore grinder. It ground 50 lbs of pork and deer in less than 5 minutes. Its a heck of a machine but its like carrying around an 80 lb bag of cement lol.

nice!
the cutting up is the most time consuming part..
my old cheap one required like 1' cubes or it would get bogged down..
I swore if I ever bought another one I want to be able to drop a brisquet in it!

my wife is telling me my time is worth more and just pay to get them processed..

Hope so. Our old grinder was the prior model cabelas sold. We bought it in 2002. It ground at least 10 deer a year for us matched in pork and we lent it out to several family members and friends who did the same with it. It was always a good grinder for us. It would grind frozen meat without hesitation. The pin on the end of the auger and the hole in the plate finally wore/wallowed out enough that the auger would contact the sides of the throat/grinder body and put a lot of metal shavings out (thank God we caught it before we put meat in!). The motor still humms along perfectly. Im going to go on the hunt and see if I can get an auger that will fit it, I know we can get a new plate/knife, that is all that it really needs.

The old company I forgot the name produced them for cabelas and was bought out buy Weston and discontinued several years ago. You can find plates and knifes that fit from other manufactures, but I have never looked for an auger. I contacted Weston and they have zero parts or support for it.

I have a LEM #8 (1/2 HP) BigBite and I added a foot pedal as it was hard to keep enough meat going into it as it grinds so fast. Also when stuffing sausage it is easy to step on and off of the pedal as needed. I only do a couple of deer a year now and it is awesome. My kids got me the jerky slicer/meat tenderizer for it and it works really good. I can't even think how bad a$$ a # 12 or #22 is.

Hand crank. Soak it in ice water before grinding. Hand crank stuffer too.

I got a #22 hand crank cast aluminum Weston... it leaves a lot to be desired in the fit and finish department. The nylon bushing at the rear of the auger was almost shot after 1 50 pound batch of sausage. I know some of the other hand cranks are made better but that one left a dog carp taste in my mouth!
