I grew up on a cotton farm in Arkansas. We always had a pea patch. We grew mostly mixed peas. We had them as peas with snaps when they first came in. Later we dried them and used them as dried peas all through the winter.

Seldom eat them anymore. I buy canned black- eyed peas and make a short version of Texas Caviar. Planning some for New Years. I simply put chopped onions, salsa, and cilantro in there. You do them?.

I'm not a big fan of black eyed peas but we have them with cabbage on New Years day. I'd like to know how many bushels of peas I shelled when I was a kid on the dairy.

Had some tonite. Fresh frozen and shelled. Wash thoroughly, bring to a boil. Skim off scum a couple times. Add bacon, onion, and Kenny’s seasoning. Bring back to boil, reduce heat and cover. Cook to desired tenderness. Drain and add more seasoning and butter. Don’t forget the sweet cornbread.

A neighbor has a sheller. He brought me a gallon of shelled peas. I cooked them down with ham hocks until I had a thick pot likker. They were great with my scratch cornbread.

I cook about 6 pieces of bacon till they are half done and set aside to cool and then chop into smaller pieces. Then I sauté half and onion and 1 de-seeded jalapeno and add bacon about midway through. I open 2 cans of Trappey`s black eyed peas with jalapenos and add the above ingredients with a little of garlic. Mike Drop.

I am fine with the HEB brand canned black eye's, then I drain, add cooked bacon and then pico de gallo...Texas caviar if you will.

Here's a more complicated recipe that I found on google.

3 Roma tomatoes seeds removed and diced.
2 ripe avocados diced.
1 15 oz can black beans rinsed and drained.
1 15 oz can black eyed peas rinsed and drained.
1 ½ cups frozen sweet corn, thawed I just usually toss it in the salad frozen unless I plan on eating it immediately, it thaws quite quickly.

I hate them, they won't be cooked in my house. Oddly enough, I do grow them in my garden and give them to a few family members that like them. They come and pick them and when they have gotten enough I till them in.

I cook dried blackeyes just like pintos. Long slow boil with a chopped onion, jalepeno, black pepper, salt and ham hocks or ham bones. Hard to beat served with fresh cornbread.

Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

We do the same love them. In fact the wife just gave me a ham bone from Christmas supper to use in the black eyes for New Years day.

Thinking about cooking blackeyes for NYE. Do you find ham bones/hocks at regular grocery stores (Kroger, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, etc)? Thinking about throwing a can of peas with onion, ham bone, jalapeño, and seasoning in the crockpot.

Yes. Most grocery stores will sell vacuum packed bags of smoked ham hocks.

We will have Black Eyed Peas with snaps and some braised Cabbage on the first. Will also have some Hog Jowl as my mom called it.
I made a run to Walley World around 5:00 PM and the scramble was on to find back eyed peas. They were out of all the dried ones and only had Great Value in canned. On the produce isle they were taking cabbage out of the crates while they were still on the stockers cart. I can't imagine how New Years Eve shopping will be.

Pure greatness. Proved I was not making it up about the snaps.

offtopic

We seldom found quail in the pea patch. Started a few threads on the upland forum about quail in the pea patch.

While cleaning quail in S Texas, I found quite a few small brown peas in the craw. Never could figure out what plant they came from.

We put black eyes in our feeders when we hunted in Winters because the land owner was scared that Aflotoxin would affect his quail he bought them also.

I’ve seen black eyed pea feed, it was split peas the we bought. The peas found in the quail craws were from a native plant growing in Brooks county. The deer hunters on that property only fed corn.
