I made a couple of pig knives over the Christmas Holidays for customers and each had a large brass guard. I decided to make a guard-less Pig Knife one that would not slip out of the hand. With those large guards I had to install a keeper strap to keep it in place while running, the issue was if the hunter needed to get his knife out quick the strap had to be removed. So I came up with this design; no guard so it fits nicely in the sheath and not fall out also allowing for a quick retrieve of the knife.
3/6th thick High Carbon I gun blued and textured the blade. It's 16" OAl the cutting edge is 10",I drilled holes in the blade to take off some of the weight.
The handle is spalted stabilized hackberry red liners for the bolster and the handle is tiger stripe stabilized maple.

Looks like it locks right in the hand holding it.

What do you do to get the black finish that stays put? I've quenched in used motor oil, but that will wear off eventually, and sometimes that is alright provided the user kept the steel rust free.

I gun blue it, with a different twist. First I heat it up a bit, not enough to take off the temper, then I clean it really good and use Brass bluing on it several times, washing it off and using 0000 steel wool, then I use cold gun blue repeating the process as I do with the brass blue at least 5 times, usually more.. I've had knives done that way over 10 years and they still looks as good as the day I done them. Just keep them oiled.
