Through a series of inheritances and in-family trades, my Dad came to be in possession of this New Model 3 in .44 Russian. It had been simply wrapped in cloth and stored in safes or safety deposit boxes for who-knows-how-long and through how many hands.

This year, Dad sent it to S&W and got back a full history of the model, and a notarized history of this particular weapon from their historian, Roy Jinks. It says the pistol was mfg. and shipped to Takata & Co., Yokohama, Japan for use by the Japanese govt. on Aug. 12, 1896. It shows carry wear, but Mr. Jinks' opinion was that the gun may have never been fired, indicating it may have been carried by a Japanese officer.

I sure would like to know the details of this pistol's trip/s around the world. Sure is a special piece and a great gift.

Question: What's the best oil I can apply to this weapon for long-term storage in the shadow-box? It's only been in there @ 2 weeks, and already showing a tendency to want to rust. I oil it with Rem Oil @ every 5th. day to keep it from doing so. Surely there's a longer-term solution...(?).

Thanks for any help.

From the formal and informal tests I have seen, FrogLube is one of best long-term rust preventatives out there. Make sure you coat the insides of the chambers and the bore as well. Probably remove the grip panels and put a thin coat in the internals too.

Not yet. I added desiccant packets and will apply the best long-term storage oil I can find asap.

I have a Model 12 riot gun that I found in the late 1980s in the southern Sudan near Yambio. When I had Winchester research the serial number on it I found that it had been sold to a state prison in Michigan in the late 1920s. I've often wondered at the circuitous route that thing had to take to find its way to me.

Birchwood Casey has an oil called barricade, it will keep rust off of anything for years. I also like to use automatic transmission fluid. Being a car junkie I frequently lube stuff with that that I'm prepping for long-term storage. I've had cylinder bores that were freshly machined and then coated with ATF that haven't rusted in 10 to 15 years with a single application of the oil.

I have also used ATF for years as a rust preventive. Read about Big Red's Bore Cleaner.
