A hunter on my deer lease last week shot two Javelina's in Foard county. I didn't even know we had Javelina in that part of the country. Has anyone else in West Texas seen Javelina?

I didn't think they went that far North. They are in West Texas, I shot one in Jefferson Davis county. I think they are pretty common out there.

I see them regularly in Foard county. Had a group of about 15 that would come to my feeder like clockwork. Yes, they are that far north.

A buddy of mine shot one outside of Wichita Falls a couple of years ago...much farther north and east than I would have expected,... so east of the OP's location and about as far north.

Been on the Cherry Holmes ranch in Jack county for years, probably escaped from Squaw mountain hunting resort.

My Brother-in-Law told me this year they have had several game cam pics of Javelina on his lease just Southwest of Austin in Travis County.

Javelina / Peccary are classified as game animals, there are 155 counties that have no open season.

The counties that do, have bag limits and or a season.

Good link! So Foard County has a season and the hunter on the OP's lease apparently took the legal limit in season.

We've got Javi's all over west Texas, bunch of them on the ranch.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Just a reminder! Javalina's are considered a game animal and the same laws apply, the meat must be consumed.

Back years ago, I shot a lot of Javelina, but now that they are a game animal (and I’d have to eat it if I shot it), I’ll never shoot another one.

Once you get over the smell they aren't bad. Have shot and processed and eaten many. Naturally I try to shoot the females.

Used them to sight in guns in Brewster co. years ago on 50,00 acre place that had water and plenty of game, rancher hated them, said they tore up fences.

No offense to anyone posting above but they've been game animals with seasons and bag limits since before WWII so there are certain things I probably wouldn't admit to on an open forum

Horse spit! A 50 lb Peccary won't tear up a fence, people just killed them because they could. Other than the occasional rooting around Prickly Pear and the constant rubbing on my well heads you would know they were here. Unless you were sighting in your guns before 1939 you just admitted to a crime possibly multiple. Been hunting Javi's for over 50 years and always knew they were a game animal and the laws they fell under.

Sow hind quarters on the grill was fantastic. Light texture with a nice flavor. Would not pass one up for sure.

I'll call BS on the fence thing as well. A large part of their diet is prickly pear. I say let them eat all they want of it. I always enjoyed watching them at my feeder. I think they get a bad rap because they are most always mounted in a fierce looking, open mouth pose. I've been able to get within feet of them. As long as they couldn't smell me I was amazed how close I could get. I never shot one because I didn't want to eat one. Plus we weren't exactly overrun with them either.

About 35 years ago, one of our hunters shot one old boar. He bbq that thing for 24 hours on an open pit. Omg worst tasting meat ever. He swore it tasted just like an Hawaiian pig roast.... No so much. Ever since that experience, I’ve let those little pig looking rodents walk away.

A simple google search would tell you they are not closely related To rodents.
