I removed about 60 coons from the resident population since the beginning of the year. I thought I had them under some semblance of control. Turns out I was wrong! I count ten in this one image, and at another feeder, about a quarter of a mile away, I discovered 7 of them lunching up on the corn.

I've got a 6 pack of Dukes that are going out this evening! It looks like I may need another 6 pack to contain this latest population explosion.

Lord only knows, SnakeWrangler! They seem to reproduce like rabbits; or feral hogs! It's a full time job keeping them in check. No telling how many pounds of corn they vacuum up every evening with a lot of help from their porky big buddies. And an occasional visit by the target species, the whitetail deer!

Golden Marlin fly bait mixed in cat food. Put it out today inside your pen and you will be picking up 10 dead ones tomorrow.

My Brother-in-Law grew up virtually dirt-poor in rural Arkansas. He said raccoon wasn't exactly regular table fare, but they did eat it on occasion.
He said it's rather greasy, and many of the recipes I've seen suggest boiling the carcass first to remove a lot of the grease and fat before final preparation.

So, get out and take down a few and let us know what you think, eh?

I grew up virtually (actually!) dirt poor in the Piney Woods of east Texas, in and around Jefferson. I remember that Mother always cooked or rendered the coons outside over an open flame. I also remember the meat being greasy, but my mom and dad "returning grace" at every meal, even if the main course was coon. So I've been there and eaten that, and have no intention of trying it again! Having said that, if the SHTF and if we find ourselves living off the grid and chowing down on whatever we can scrounge up, you can betcha that I'll be serving up coon and hard tack if that's what it takes. I will cook it outside and downwind from where we're living! :-)

Trapping coons is a never-ending project.
On 200 acres we killed 100s in the first year. It was so bad that we could drive around with the Gator and spot their eyes in trees and blitz the feeders with a shotgun. A dozen a night was normal. We have never quit trapping for 9 years and still get about one every week or so. It is amazing that we can still trap about 50 coons a year, they just keep on coming.
We have only baited DP traps with corn.

I'd like to find out what the quail population is before and after coon eradication.

I'm in agreement with this philosophy! There's a lot of things I'd prefer not to do, but which I'd do in a heartbeat if I had to.

Of course, if you prefer not to go through all the hassle of preparing your own meal …

That is quite the gaze of raccoons!

Great place to train a young hound. I keep my coon population under control by hunting them with the hounds. No need of traps and it helps keep an old man and a bunch of potlickers in shape.

If coon hide prices went back to $20, most of our coon problems would go away. When I was growing up, we hunted them on foot, horseback and with dogs. Good times. It sure kept us out of a lot of trouble in town.
