I read a book called Lonesome Dove twice. They were making a cattle drive to Montana. They started with a cook named Bolivar. They called him Bol. He finally rode away. They somehow hooked up with a new cook named Po Campo. He never would ride in the chuck wagon. He chose to walk beside the wagon all the way. He picked different things along the to add to his beans. One of the ingredients was coriander which is the seeds from cilantro. I think the beans were pinto beans or frijoles. My momma always cooked white beans when I was growing up. I still confused. They were called great northern or navy beans. I think the original Boston baked beans were white beans as well as canned pork in beans. How many different dried beans have you cooked over the years?

Great Northern beans are the size of pinto beans and cook a little faster than pintos. They’re great alone or mixed 50/50 with pintos. That have a thicker broth than pintos.

Navy beans are about half the size of pintos and take much longer to cook, but the payoff is there. They are great with ham and cornbread. Yes, Boston Baked uses Navy beans.

Pinto beans, lima beans, black beans, great northern, blackeyed peas, kidney beans, cannellini beans, garbanzo beans, fava beans, red beans, and the bastard of the bean pot the lentil beans. I can eat them all, but do not care for lentils or garbanzo. But my preferred bean is the pinto bean spiced up with chili seasoning mix like Mortons or Williams.

I have also had mesquite bean coffee and bread and cookies made with mesquite bean flour. The coffee is actually pretty good, kind of like a honey flavored tea. The ground up mesquite bean flour gives the baked goods an earthy flavor.

Only pintos growing up. Grandma always had a pot of beans in the fridge. She cooked them simple with alot of bacon ends and pieces and they were delicious. I was pretty much raised on pinto beans and cornbread, and bologna sandwiches.

I guess that is why I am either full of beans or full of bologna? It depends in who you ask.

As a trucker, I don't even keep a microwave in my truck. I have a crock pot and a rice cooker. I literally live on rice, beans, tortillas, and jalapenos when i am on the road.. Occasionally some chesters chicken at love's, when i get fuel. More often than not some peanut butter cups too. I have eaten then big 2 pound reeses for dinner a couple of times!

Make no mistake I eat pretty good like that and I love beans. I have pretty much eaten every kind of beans you can get at walmart. I keep a variety of dry beans and also keep around a dozen cans of black beans in stock. More often than not I eat the canned black beans with rice in a burrito. The black beans are the only canned beans that dont have some sort of strange preservative presumably to enhance or retain color? Just beans, water, salt.

I really like the "hambeens" 15 bean soup. It's just a variety of beans with a seasoning packet.

My favorite are still pintos cooked with bacon ends and pieces. I just dont have room for a fridge or freezer in my little truck.

I buy the bags of "15 Bean Soup", that way I get all of them.

When I got divorced my Step-Mother asked what I wanted for X-mas, I told her a crock pot and cook book for beans.

I won't put lima beans in chili. Other than that I like most beans.

I think I've tried pretty much all types of dry beans over the years ... one I haven't seen mentioned above is Butter Beans ... do black eyed peas fall in the dry bean category?

Agree with Hancock, lot easier to buy Bush brand pintos in gallon size and add what seasons you want. Think it's just as cheap and a butt load less trouble.
