Got to my spot.
Got setup with the wind at my back.
This was going to be a great day.
10 minutes to shooting light a flock of mallards land in the spread.
By shooting light I had 100 ducks in range.
Started thinking about my buddy and how dumb I am for not going and seeing him at the hospital.
Actually had a drake mallard and two hens out of the water next to my layout.
Cried for three hours, never took the gun off safe.
RIP JJ...

I'm betting JJ would have rather had you in that layout than with him at the end (speaking for myself). He's in a better place my condolences on your loss.
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Got up one morning and had one of the best hunts of my life. Mallard pouring in, working to calls, dog was spectacular that morning. Ended up with a 2 man of all green with two bull sprigs for our finishers, hunt took about 40 minutes because we were being picky about what we shot. As we were loading up, my grandmother called (she was in the hospital and was due to be released that afternoon) and asked if I would bring her a specific dress to wear home from the hospital. I told her sure, I loved her and I'd see her in a couple of hours. She told me that she was proud of me and that she loved me. When we got home (20 minute drive), my buddies wife met us in the driveway with the news that my grandma had passed..
Knee mail sent for you and your buddy's family.

He was a really really good guy. I still use one of the duck calls he gave me when I was a kid (about 12 years ago). Rest in peace JJ
