This is my Winchester 458 win mag. It’s a hog stopper

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

This is an example of where an AR gas gun in that caliber would be much more user friendly to the shoulder and more shots for a sounder.....
I recommend a 300 HAMR or 6.8 shooting Hornady 120SST and 130Speer Hotcore for the HAMR in an AR15.... I have never had a hog get away from either round regardless of their size when I do my part and a lot more fun.

458 can be fun but recoil is stiff. 458 Lot about the same just a little more recoil and a little faster with the same bullet. I have shot both but these days I will not repeat the "fun"
mounted a scope on a Winchester M70 in 458 Win Mag years ago when in college and the guy ask the boss if I would go the range with him. He ask me to shoot it and sight it in for him I did and got lucky with bore sighting, 2 shots 1 inch high at 100 and they were touching. He said that is good enough and put the rifle in the case. He put his new gun on consignment that afternoon. Said after watching me shoot it he was not going to. I did not buy it either. He decided his 300 Win Mag was big enough for his bear hunt in a month.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

I've always found the recoil of the heavier hitters (say .375 and up) to be much more tolerable off the bench when I grasp the forend with my off hand and then rest the back of that hand on the forward bags. My left hand (with a normal firing grip on the rifle) soaks up quite a number of foot-pounds of free recoil. Plus it allows the rifle to move in recoil as it would when fired in the field...making my POI more consistent.
Short benches and large bore diameters have always been an evil combination. Having to hunch forward on any bench prevents your upper body from moving backward as easily with recoil...which is why the guys who regulate big bore double rifles quite often use a "standing bench". I much prefer to have my upper body move more easily than to have to "eat" all that recoil energy at once.
Ultimately, though...it's whatever works for you!

I can not stand to be stretched out, almost prone, on a short bench. My scopes are adjusted for shooting in the field and from standing positions. I can generally get comfortable when completely prone, but not when hunkered over an uncomfortable bench.

I use to love the big boomers when ammo was reasonable. When I could feed my 458 for $30 a box it was my go to pig gun. Then prices started climbing so I dropped down to the 375H&H...….then those prices sky rocketed to. I still love the big bores but since I don't hand load I can no longer justify the ammo cost just to roll some pigs over. I have always said I will never be able to afford a African dangerous game hunt so the next best thing is a big bore rifle and some man eatin feral hogs. Its like the Texas version of a dangerous game hunt but MUCH cheaper!

Still haven't shot a critter with it, but I reckon it'll make a hole in one.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.
