Saw this on another thread. Thoughts?

"NYT article said you had to wait just like everyone else even if you had a reservation. Plus staff varied from indifferent to rude.

Those two things alone mean it will never get a dime of my money. My pet peeve is paying good money to be treated like crap - no matter the context. Though it seems to be a “thing” these days."

Service matters but fine line between service and customer expectations of said service. When I go somewhere, I generally expect service to match or exceed my demeanor at that moment. If I'm in a particularly great and jovial mood, I want the wait service to feed off that and provide something similar, conversely if I'm just Blaise I certainly don't expect exceptional service per se. I haven't set the tone myself. Above all I expect food to taste good not necessarily exceptional. Paying a 15-20% tip in my mind doesn't entitle me to be treated as a king especially if I haven't paid utmost respect the other way. Treat as want to be treated and be honest about it is what I will finish with.

If I receive bad service I do not tip. If I receive good service I do tip. I don't always believe in tippy by %. I guess im probably cheap, but I don't think the waitstaff at a nice steak house that has a $200 bill for my wife and I on date night deserves 3 times the tip the waitstaff that helps us at my favorite hole in the wall for the table of 6. If you calculate it by % of the bill that's how it would come out.

Good service doesn't make up for mediocre food.

I believe that too many people are scared of looking or being called cheap for not tipping for bad service that it perpetuates bad service.

To be clear, that post was mainly in reference to high-end expensive restaurants or hotels or whatever.

If I am paying the big $$$, I expect impeccable service. If I want to get snubbed, ignored, or treated like crap - I can go to Academy or the DMV and get that treatment much cheaper. smile

I understand the expectations should probably match the price/establishment. That said, the girl in the drive-thru at Whataburger this morning was both sweet and pretty as a picture.

Love the service at Chic-fil-A. It was windy with a little drizzle yesterday. She was standing there with her pad in her hand. She looked at me smiled and said Bill white truck. They soon learn to read you mind, or at least my mind. I always order the number 1 with pepper jack. They remember me because sometimes I add no condoms.

Academy? I wouldn't expect to read that. My local (Conroe) store treats me well when I go in there. I understand the DMV reference.

I will pay for good food without hesitation but if the staff is rude or simply doesn’t pay attention to my empty tea glass I will not be back. I understand that often places are understaffed through no fault of the one s who did show up to work, that entitles them to being busy, and me getting slow service. It does not entitle them to rudeness. If you can’t be pleasant then you have no business in the service industry.

Same.....3 Popeyes within a few miles of me, I’ve given each of them more than enough chances because I like the food, but they just continuously remind me how much they suck.

As for Popeyes...I just order at the counter and check my bag well before leaving. Yes, a lot of times its missing something! They are never rude, just incompetent.

Service matters to me. I’m not an overly demanding customer, nor do I have unrealistic expectations, but I will avoid places if service is sub par and I won’t tip near as well. I don’t penalize the wait staff if it’s issue with the kitchen. I have a buddy that will go cheap on tips if something is wrong with his food, but the service is good. I cover his jackassery and will give the waiter more money. I try to avoid going out to eat with him.

I tip every time I got out and someone serves me. Sometimes ok, sometimes very well. I also make it very easy for my waitstaff to have a very pleasant experience dealing with my party. I am positive regardless. I also try and understand if my server is “off” and remind myself of the saying, be kind to every person you encounter, you never know the battle they are facing. I would hate for my job to be in service industry if my life was a shambles. So I always try to make their encounter with me a positive experience regardless and try to show kindness. If it’s a bad experience I will not return. No business survives without repeat customers.

There is never a justification for being a jerk. Ever.

I believe in payng someone for their job. A server/waitstaff is paid very low with the expectation of a tip to augment their low pay. I will not deny someone their money if they serve me. I will over pay for great service, most of the time keep it at 20%+ for as expected service, and maybe around 15-18% for sub-par service. I never drop a tip amount for poor food, that isn't he servers fault.

I will however not return if service or food is not good. We will give a second chance for really good food and subpar service, but usually just once and if service continues to be lousy, then we move on. There's plenty of places that have good food to waste time in a place that has garbage service.

Service matters, I will never return to a place no matter how good the food is if the service sucks.
