Good afternoon sports fans,
I recently bought 100 acres in Freestone County (Oakwood) about a half mile West of Big Lake Bottom WMA. I'm planning to plow up a few 1/2 acre plots throughout the property but dont know what grows best in that area. The soil is extremely sandy. Any help would be appreciated. Do I need to lime treat my soil? I'm very new to all this so all recommendations are welcome.

Mixture of wheat and Elbon rye grass, 50/50, about 50 lbs. to the acre planted in October. Take a soil sample, dig down about six (6) inches in multiple places in each plot. You can take it to Davis Country Store in Buffalo and they will send it off for analysis. Talk to Thomas Davis there for any help you need.. .

Mr. Neal in the hardware store in Oakwood is a nice guy. Ask him when you need contacts in the local area and who you can trust and who to stay away from if you need help.
Let me know if you need anything.

My property is in Fairfield I have clay and sand mix soil. I also plant rye and wheat but also plant Austrian winter peas. If you can keep the hogs out of the peas the deer love them. I also have planted the high priced Daikon radishes with good success but found they didn't prefer them over rye grass which is much cheaper. I also lime and use triple 13 fertilizer. Good luck with your food plot and hunting!

our place is NE from Fairfield, east of the old power plant that is bordered by the Trinity river. most of our soil is very sandy. We have put in several food plots with oats, oats with 13/13/13 and wheat with 13/13/13. The plots with oats and wheat with the fertilizer is noticeably healthier and growing better than those without the fertilizer. We haven't done any soil samples but suspect we should to get better results. We planted at a rate of about 80-100 lbs per acres for the seeds and I have no clue what the setting was where the fertilizer was applied (son was applying)
