CON: if you wait till its actually "Deer hunting" Weather, Mid November, its my experience if you are hunting an "up to" 150 deer , $3,500+/-, MOST if not all deer in this score range have already been shot in September/October, the one's which might qualify are broke up from fighting.
What am I missing? should the "early" hunts be for culling and does?

Are you talking about making your own lease MLD compliant or going on a paid hunt on an MLD property?

we have been on an MLD lease for years - we start hunting mid October and some of our very best bucks are killed the first several weeks - yes the weather is not perfect but the bucks are in their summer patterns still and pretty predictable as to what area of the ranch they frequent.
I would assume a package hunt on most south texas ranches would be the same
You can't fix stupid

I wouldn't have an issue hunting on a MLD ranch any time of the year, but I'm not pulling the trigger unless it's what I want. Not what the guide wants me to shoot, and if I never see anything that makes me happy, I'm not shooting anything. I also make sure that it's in writing somewhere what I will pay if I do not shoot anything. I will only book a hunt when I have every payment, or fee in writing for either situation. Having said that, I have never booked a whitetail hunt on a ranch, just been to quite a few ranches for exotics. While on those ranches, I have observed some nice whitetails and talked to the guide or owner of that ranch about hunting whitetail there, but I already have a nice 10 point from Wyoming that I'm happy with and for me, I want variety on my wall.

I imagine it’s different for each ranch. It sounds like a definite “CON” on the places you’ve been.
I used to think that I needed to do all my sheep hunts in the first week of the season to make sure I had first chance. I have now concluded it’s not a big factor.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

we have been low fence MLD for 6 years now and I cant really think of any cons... Those culls that are hard to find in Nov, are easy to find when rifle opens same weekend as bow...During Oct we are concentrating on culls... We save the does for the rut or after..Our bigger mature bucks tend to separate mid Sept so finding them are still a challenge...Hunting scrape lines in Oct have been productive since we start out rut first Nov and its heavy by mid Nov...

What are the requirements of the landowner to participate in the MLD program?

It was already mentioned above but an important detail is when the hunt is scheduled. This is true for MLD or non-MLD but ideally, you'd want to go earlier in the season when the deer have not been shot at. I've hunted both and I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.
