I have been thinking about quitting my job and becoming a weather man. They cannot predict the winds at the coast accurately. Last weekend I hired a crew and had 5000 lbs of concrete to move. Called for 10 mph winds. We got 21 mph at Pass Cavayo. I had to scrap the trip. Mind you each trip is $500. Fast forward to yesterday, weather dude called for 10s, then changed late yesterday. I scrapped the trip and canceled the crew. We got 7 mph winds. I'd like to take a 2 by 2 to that dude. Tomorrow calling for 10 to 15 mph winds from the South east. I am taking one worker and just my fishing boat. 5 trips with 14 80lbs bags on each trip. 90 miles by boat. I'd say we are going to have a long day. Duck camp will be built, even if its my last build. Oh and if any of you decide to build on an island, don't put 5000 lbs of concrete on a pontoon boat all at one time. It was pretty hairy there for a while! I was pretty sure we were going to see it sink at one point. The rear half of the pontoon went under water for about 15 to 20 seconds. It was not coming up on its own, I had to pull it forward with my boat before it slowly righted itself. I was thinking, there goes 5000 lbs of concrete.

So far as the conversation goes, I developed a set of rules for this build. These rules will probably stay in place for the remainder of my boating days. In my boat, you wear a life jacket. I also keep a set of super sharp knives on both sides of the console. Everyone knows if there is a problem with the tow boat, cut the dang rope. We can deal with whatever it is later, but for now get rid of the problem.

The wind forecasts where I hunt are never right.

The only solution I could cone up with. Canceled the crew and left the pontoon with all the lumber at home. I took one guy and we moved all 5000 lbs of concrete by hand. We started with 10 bags in the boat and headed to the island. We got the ranger and the trailer out of the barn and parked it at the docks. The next load we went to 15 bags and stayed with 15 the rest of the day. We loaded the boat, off loaded to the flatbed and transported them to the site 3 miles away and got the concrete in the holes.

As I get older I am losing strength. I used to be a bull of a man. The strength the lord has taken from my muscles, he put into my tenacity. I can say this, I feel every damn bag all at one time right now. Even my face hurts. 220 miles by land, 90 miles by sea. The fella I took dont weigh a buck fifty but he has no quit in his game. We were proud of the finish.
