For regular rifle season has it always been first Saturday in November ?

I know Texas is pretty liberal with the amount of time we get. But November can be pretty warm. I would rather hunt further into January.

Thoughts?

We all would. Last year they tried to extend general season for all of Texas to match South Texas. From what I remember it had something like 80% support but as usual the 20% got what they wanted and we have a shorter season.

That’s what I’ve always heard too, don’t doubt it.

I’d love to see and wait for it...

A general black powder season prior to rifle season

1-2 weeks

The State could charge for it and make $$$

That’s choice though. I spent the whole Thanksgiving week hunting, nine glorious days.

Temps in November used to be colder, in the late 70s we had 4 inches of snow on 10 Nov. Back in 1971 or '72 I was iced in outside of London or 3 days. .

Texas has a pretty long rifle season, but no real muzzleloader season, and only an early archery season. For as long as I can remember opening weekend has always been the first weekend in November. Arkansas' opening weekend is always the second weekend in November and they have archery until the end of February.

I'm fine with rifle season ending in January, but would be nice to go an extra week. Usually in January I'm after ducks though.

I do agree with Dogcatcher that is seems like in the last 20-30 years the weather has warmed in November and now it stays colder longer into March and even April. I think the pattern has shifted so that the weather season has moved a few weeks later in the year as far as temps.

I'm perfectly good with the length and structure of deer season in Texas. MLD has pretty much made it as long as possibly anyway if one wanted to go that route. If they did want to extend general season in central zone a week I would go along with it.

IMO cold weather has very little to do with deer season. California has a season for deer that starts in July. South Carolina has a deer season that starts in August. In most western states, their seasons for big game are all but over by the time Thanksgiving rolls around.

We are fortunate in Texas that we have season set up the way we do, its a breeze as long as you have a place to hunt. Long season, liberal limits, its a pretty gravy deal

In South TX, the real start of the season is the first cold front in December. Before that is just the preamble.

Lots and lots of big deer are killed during the preamble then

I would just rather hunt in colder weather. Less wasps, less leaves, etc.
