Does the A&M bow attract bigger bucks? LOL. Congrats to your boy. How old is he? Not sure about the bow as a buck attractant. My wife makes sure there is always a bow. My son is 11. My boy is 11 as well. Awesome that your son is already to the point that he can and wants to hunt on his own. Mine has not asked to hunt on his own yet, and I doubt that I would let him yet. My Nephew is 15, and has only been hunting on his own this year.

My older son is 15 and I think he was 13 before he was on a stand by himself. I let the 11 yr old sit by himself about half the hunts last week and we talked a bunch on the hunts leading up to it and between his solo hunts. Gun safety wasn't my biggest concern. My rule has always been that the guns are unloaded and in the case until getting in the stand, and they are the same before leaving the stand. Partly for safety and partly because our rifles have nice wooden stocks and I don't want them banged up.
My biggest concern was respect for the animals and proving he could hunt with some judgement and not just shoot every deer that comes out. I think he did fine. I might have passed this buck for another year, but I'm thrilled he shot it and was excited to shoot it.
This is a family ranch that we are at all the time and extended periods during summers and school breaks, so he has a little more ability and familiarity with guns, outdoors, and this specific place etc than most of his peers. We will be hunting with my parents in Rocksprings over New Years, and he won't hunt alone because it is not home turf. I think intimate familiarity with our ranch gives me a little more comfort in letting him fly solo there.

Great job Dad! Great looking kids & memories made forever. How long did it take to you to get over to your son? My Dad took forever to get to me or so it seemed on my first solo kill. Congratulations!

It probably took 15-20 minutes at most from the “bang ker-thoonk” sound until I pulled up on his stand. Because I was in the stand with my daughter it took a few minutes to get ourselves packed up and back to the truck to drive over to him. In the map screenshot below, I was in the upper center of the left field, he was in the lower right of the right field. Not very far apart. Probably 800 yards direct line from stand to stand.
