While some might see a rifle sling as nothing more than a $15 add-on item, I've seen guys who seem to want something that's almost a work of art. And with so many online sources now available, you can get some really nice customized slings that will easily last a lifetime.

So then, in your opinion, what makes for a really good rifle sling?

IMO, a sling should enhance the appearance of the rifle or shotgun, much like clothing on a very attractive woman. But just like clothing, appearance should never take anything away from functionality.

Functionality for my AR, read nylon with metal swivel snaps, traditional leather for my Rem 700 BDL

I prefer plastic or composite swivels over metal because they're less likely to leave marks on fine wood.

What do you want to use it for? Walking with your rifle slung on your shoulder or using it as torsion to achieve a more stable hold while making a shot? I like a 1" wide leather one with adjustment and keeper slung over one shoulder with muzzle pointed down. If blind hunting. I will rest rifle on it if sling does not make noise. If so just use the quick disconnects.

This. I have tried everything but the best I have found are economical rubber slings like Uncle Mike’s or The Claw for my backcountry rifles. They check both boxes.

For rifles that just get toted back and forth to the deer blind (like my wife’s and daughters’ rifles) the guys on here did some custom personalized slings for them.

I just spent 2 hours on the Victoria's Secret website, and I didn't see a rifle sling to fit your needs. I'll look again.

IMHO, a good carry sling is made of leather, is uniform in width without any cobra flairs or shell holders to minimize bulk. The inside area that goes over your shoulder should be rubber lined to eliminate any slipping.

Seriously though, my favorite and most comfortable sling is a cheap Allen brand with elastic on one end of the strap. I've carried some heavy precision rifles in many shooting matches that lasted all day, and that cheap sling has been the most comfortable in every position. Shoulder slung, crossbody, muzzle up, muzzle down. Even shooting offhand from a slung position. It just works.

My most expensive rifle has a Claw on it.

X2, the Cooper, a custom, the Dakota and the semi custom all wear claw slings for a reason. Comfortable and work

I agree as well. I used to do a lot of duck hunting so a sling was a must. Mine is padded with a sticky rubber strip running down the middle of it so it stays put.

Firm believer in the Claw. They just work, with no slipping.

I have 5 with claw slings and one with a custom for Earnie which was my grandfathers rifle.

Patrol carry across the front, muzzle down with a 2 point sling works the best for me, even for bolt action rifles. My favorite one is definitely the Rifles Only carbine sling.
Rifles Only sling The bungee section makes carrying heavier rifles a little bit more comfortable, and removes the need for length adjustments if I have to use it to support a shooting position. It's a very simple design, not overly complicated. Just enough to work well.

Rifles with flush cups or a carbine get a rifles only carbine sling. Also use a tab gear and a sap a lot too. All are top notch.

I don't think there's any question that a sling can add "character" to a rifle, as does a holster to a handgun.

Turner saddlery 1907 aws. Don't slip and provides excellent shooting platform. Not really needed if you are shooting from a box blind, but if you might need to shoot unaided it is dang good to have

I would add adjustable to this short list.

Comfort and the ability to carry with my hands free of the sling, and the rifle positioned cross body ready to shoulder.....Safari for bolt guns.....VTAC for my ARs......

Looks should have no influence on selection it's totally function and performance........

Simple and durable, put on and take off with ease on a synthetic stock gun or a tactical gun. If you have a nice wood stock, naturally you should complement that with a nice leather sling that still meets the same criteria.

A rifle that inspires pride of ownership just by the look and feel should have a sling that complements it in that way.

Function over form- yes I do agree that how well it works is more important than how good it looks. But a fine rifle is like a combination of a tool and a fine piece of jewelry, that holds it's value.

So if you have a rifle that you Can't help but to pull it out of safe to appreciate the look and the feel, the sling should compliment it.

A regular nylon sling works fine for tacticool or plastic fantastic, but a fine piece of craftsmanship deserves the same in a sling.

If I have a sling on a gun, it's a Claw. They are awesome. They don't slip. Work with heavy jackets, work in the rain and snow.
