Wife bought a guided hunt at CCA banquet for down on the coast. She's gonna take her dad and our daughter, 25. I get to stay home, LOL. I don't mind. It will be a time to be cherished for all of them. My question is, guide told my wife not to bring her 20, Benelli M2. Told her it wasn't big enough, she needed a 12. Said the birds would be bigger and a 20 wouldn't get it done? I dont duck hunt, never had a chance, but I always thought with right shells, the 20 should work. I have a SBE that my wife plans on using, wont let daughter, LOL. So now I'm trying to find another 12 for daughter if I really need to. Thoughts?

A 20 will kill them just as dead as a 12. However, I would follow the guide’s rules.

It’s not going to hurt and on the longer shots the 12 is better.

If I had another 12, it wouldnt be no big deal. I dont want to have to buy another dang gun. Buddies of mine dont have 1 for me to borrow, at least I havent found one yet. They all have O/U's

It's the coast they don't decoy. She should probably take a 10 gauge as decoy shy as those birds are.

1. A 20 gauge is fine. A 12 is better. Not all guides know what they’re talking about, and I’m not sure about this one, but he may be on to something.
2. It’s not okay what your wife did, excluding you. Stop pretending it is.
3. Stop abusing question marks.

I have used both gauges. I suggest the 20 gauge, since that is what you have. Will it work as good as a 12? Most likely not, but it will work.

A 20 GA shotgun that she is familiar with, fits her well, and if she normally shoots well with, will be a much better shotgun to take than a 12 GA she has never shot before that may or may not fit her.

A 20 GA shotgun that she is familiar with, fits her well, and if she normally shoots well with, will be a much better shotgun to take than a 12 GA she has never shot before that may or may not fit her. Wise words, I agree!
You should have been here yesterday!

The guide knows nothing. The only difference between a 12 and a 20 is pellet count. Pellets flying at 1300 fps from a 20 are no different than pellets flying from a 12 at 1300 fps.
What you really need to do is buy good ammo. I'm going to suggest boss bismuth. Then make sure it's patterning well at 30-40 yards. Bismuth hits harder than steel, density and kinetic energy thing. People on the coasts swear by boss, they've basically quit water swatting sea ducks bc it's killing them dead, not crippling like steel does.
Boss is basically $1.20 a trigger squeeze, but if you're killing the bird, your not shooting 3 .70 cent rounds to kill that bird. So up front it seems more expensive, but in the long run, it's not.

Their #1 selling shell is a 2 3/4" #5 for a 12 gauge, and people are smacking northern geese and sea ducks with them. Get some 3" #4 or 5's for the 20 and let your daughter show that guide what's up. This is a fan group, but look at all the posts, and the birds being shot. https://www.facebook.com/groups/256114618349560/

This is not going to end well. It's the guide's house...he tells you to bring 12's it's probably because he knows what his house hunts like. It's the coast they don't decoy. She should probably take a 10 gauge as decoy shy as those birds are. As much as it kills me to say....he's right

Infact most of my upland and migratory is now with a 24” barreled 20ga O/U, because she hunts with me so much it’s easy to buy a case of upland and case of steel OP-Bring what she is most comfortable with. I like #3&4 hyperSonics down there

The guides probably pretty new giving hunts to CCA, or thinks 20 ga is just a crippler and he has a terrible or no dog to run them down. I think it’s cute my wife schools ya apparently at the coast.

I went.to the coast once with a guide bought at the expense of too much free beer at a Delta banquet... it sucked. Only good thing was we hit the boat ramp at probably 2 in the afternoon.

People on the coasts swear by boss, they've basically quit water swatting sea ducks bc it's killing them dead, not crippling like steel does. A Modified choke puts only 70% of the shot in a 30 inch circle at 40 yards making the pellet count difference between a comparable 20 and 12 ga shell even that much more insignificant. Being a special hunt with family, the added expense of using bismuth would be worth it. It will perform just like shooting lead shot out of that 20. Using that she will likely outshoot the 12GA guns on the hunt if they are using steel. I sometimes use Kent Bismuth in my 20s and have been very happy with that combination.
