Worth it? At $100/month in storage plus insurance, I am thinking maybe not worth it, but I know this is the only way I can get the wife to go camping/hunting with me. Would make beach trips cheaper.

What do you all think that have them?

What do you think that had had them and got rid of them?

Renting them looks to be the better deal to me.

I was looking at that and with $1200/year in storage and probably another $600/year for insurance, you can rent them for 12 days a year for that price easily.

our insurance is $400/year.

I just bought a RV ( not a toy hauler ) and was weighing the pros/cons.

to me, we will use it way more than 12 days a year, have the freedom to hook up and go whenever we please, and we will enjoy our trips more and make more memories with the family. We stay in hotels more than 12 days a year as it is with our sons baseball trips, so this in itself will be a big bonus.

Out of state hunting trips will be easier now as well

Do you store it at your house or pay to store it?

Its absolutely worth it to us. We spend around 100 nights a year in our 5th wheel, mostly at local area lakes with in 2 hours of the house. We store ours at the house for free.

We go camping a lot so it’s well worth it to us. I built an rv carport on my place. Maybe rent one and see how the wife likes it.

I know that I would use it, but it cuts down on the time if it isnt something the wife wants to do as well.

Good idea on trying it out.

Owning obviously has its pros and cons. We use our camper at the deer lease Sep-Feb and then for a month or two in the spring so this offsets storage costs year round. It’s nice having your own place to stay and being able to use it when you want. The rentals are fine for a once a year trip but for a long term solution it won’t be what you want. One other option with owning is renting it out when you aren’t using it. I have no experience doing this but you can rent it out through some places and they take care of storage for you and you make a little money. Insurance is cheap FYI.

I appreciate the info, I'm still on the fence. I am looking around to see what deals I can find used.

While you will pay more at a dealership, if this is your first purchase it might be worth the money to buy from one. A reputable dealer will do a pretty good inspection and you can at least know everything works when you get it. We purchased our first trailer used and the 1-2 hr walk through they did with us explaining how everything worked was worth it’s weight in gold. If not bring someone who knows something about trailers and knows what to look for with leaks, repairs, etc.

That is some pretty good advice. I have started to look out in West Texas/San Angelo and am finding more used options. (I have to go out there this month to pick up my deer from my dads anyways)

I was looking for one almost 2 years ago and we ended up not purchasing....what I wanted to spend didn't align with what standard my wife sat smile

Anyway, one thing to be very aware of....truck and capacities. The dealers will put you in a toy hauler that your truck will pull but you will be WAY over on capacities. Pin weight being a biggie....I'd venture to say over half the bigger toy haulers you see on the road are over their capacities if they aren't pulling with a dualie. Just pay attention and know what your numbers are.

Good luck, I hope your search goes a little better than mine wink

We had one for years and still have it. We used to use it a minimum of 5 weeks a year and usually 7-8 weeks a year. We just don't anymore. Only reason we haven't sold it is its stored inside on our own property and due to age it isn't worth much anymore.

New ones depreciate quickly. If your not going to use it a bunch I wouldn't buy one. We enjoy renting a house etc. at coast more than a TT or hotel and since we have a bigger group of people going usually it isn't a bad deal either.

roflmao Yep, I have already had that struggle with the wife as well.

As far as the weights, that is something I have been looking at for sure.

I have seen that they depreciate pretty quickly, which is why i am confused why some of these people arent trying to get rid of them a little harder. I am still on the fence.

When oil production is up travel trailers are harder to find. The oil field uses a lot of them. Price of oil tanks and there will be a bunch of fancy trailers for sale when people are out of work. Which reminds me of another thing. Don't buy a trailer someone has lived in. As far as depreciation, they depreciate from new pretty quickly but will plateau after a few years and hold value better. This depends on the length, etc. but the small and mid size trailers are always in demand (anything that can be pulled by a 1500).

What makes you want a toy hauler over a regular RV? What toys are you going to be hauling?

What happened to tent camping? A $200 tent, a couple of hundred in sleeping bags, junk and a cook stove. No insurance, no monthly storage fees. Load the toy in the back of the pickup, throw the camping g=ear in and go. Enjoy nature in it's own setting, not from the inside of a box on wheels.

Having a wife and two daughters that want to go to the deer lease with me.....A shower, toilet, AC, microwave and satellite TV to keep everyone happy during hunts. I spend all day outside, at night it is nice to be inside when it is 30 degrees or 100 degrees.

I have spent more nights outside than most people, I have no problem with a tent.

The wife isnt really about that.

I perfectly understand that. Before I met my wife we didn't have anything except an electric meter and a well at our place. Outhuose and a tent. The first several trips we slept in the truck. I slept many a night on a flatbed trailer. A case of beer always seemed to help lul us off to sleep lol. Id do it again but i'd be divorced if I tried to make my wife. My brothers wife endured it with us. She was a TROOPER!
