I was invited to hunt with a good friend Dkershen on his families ranch. He has managed the ranch for over 20 years and it shows. With this being my first mule deer hunt and it was very special I prepared before having Fireman JG load rounds for my 300 Win Mag and had the dope to 800 even though that was not needed. On Friday evening we scouted the ranch and came across 4 shooters. Taking Dave’s advise and expertise with mule deer we selected a small blind on the edge of the wheat field. So the next morning I got set up in the blind at 6:30 and the field was clear. At approximately 7:30 a herd of foes entered the field from my right with a mature buck. They were on the move and crossed the field before coming to a stop. I checked my range finder and had the buck at 283 yards, but was contorted in the stand as my 300 Win Mag is long and the blind is very small. I despised to pass as I did not believe the shot would be clean. I looked to my right and another buck came in the field following them. I shot him at 75 yards around 7:45. Dkershen has become a great friend over the years and this ranch is just beautiful. I love to hunt as it is my passion and for me this is defined as harvesting mature animals, cooking, hanging out with buddies and campfires. For me this was not just a wonderful weekend, but a true trophy bunch that is getting shoulder mounted.

Rams also pitched in trying to help my brother and I locate this cull buck for a friend. Was his first buck and he found that hunting culls is often a lot harder than trophy hunting. [Linked Image]
