Turkey...… Every year I cook a turkey breast and there is almost none eaten. Even the few people that eat it only eat a small piece(trying to be polite, I guess). Every year I try talking my wife out of having me cook it, but I lose every year. No More..... She told me today that we are no longer cooking turkey/breast because no one eats enough of it to matter. We had at least 90% left and almost all of a spiral ham was eaten. Now you might say that it wasn`t prepared correct and tasted bad, but that just isn`t the case. Our family has never eaten turkey. Hopefully she will not change her mind in the next 12 months.

I tried something new this year. Instead of a whole bird for only us 2, I cooked a whole turkey breast and bought a pack of smoked legs. I brined the breast overnight and read on the interweb that you can cook it in the crock pot,. Dang ugliest and saltiest bird I have ever tasted! Luckily we had the legs that were just warmed in the oven wrapped in foil. Wife said she can salvage the breast in other dishes. Thank goodness there were no guests. Might just do the leg thing next year.

Did you rinse the breast well after brining it? It should not have been that salty if given a good rinsing.

Well...I rinsed it in the pot it was sitting in trying to not make a mess, so probably not rinsed enough and I just read on the packaging the breast was already brined! So my bad all around!

My wife and I decided at about the same time that we would no longer entertain at all. Not because of the turkey but because of the fragmented family. We got up to 16 guest. They started rushing off to other events.

We never have anyone over anymore. I personally would just as soon go to Furrs or Golden Corral as they put out a fine spread, but I like leftovers too much.

We have turkey twice a year - Thanksgiving and Christmas. For me, that's two times too many. We always have a deer roast or two along with the bird. Never any deer roast left. Always turkey left.

I did a roast turkey and also bought a pre-smoked turkey breast. We had a LOT of turkey left over ... we vacuumed sealed and into the freezer to have a Christmas ... ha! We will have spiral cut ham along with the leftover turkey then.

I like turkey. Only eat it twice a year thanksgiving and Christmas and love it. I eat the ham and whatever else too, but im not missing out on the turkey. Sure we had leftovers, we had a 23 pound turkey and a huge ham for 10 people 4 of which are under 8 years old. I got some turkey for turkey noodle soup and turkey salad sandwiches for lunch, win win. I love it and we always do a bigger turkey than we could ever possibly eat to have the leftovers.

My wife gets a free turkey from work, we always offer it to the family member who is hosting for the year, but if they dont want it I always get it anyway. I portion it out we fry the wings, brine and bake or smoke the breast and make soup or pot pie out of the thighs and legs.

We just do a chicken. I appreciate turkeys fried or smoked (I guess any meat made that way is OK by me!) and I don't mind it sliced as lunchmeat but a whole turkey is a) too big and b) not going to be adored so much by my family.

My mother always did a fresh hen and it was better than turkey, but I can do without it also.

Don't get me wrong. We gave up on hosting, with picky eaters, complications with schedules, and clean up. We still had out turkey.

I normally smoke 1-2 turkeys and inject/fry 2-3. Other folks bring traditional baked turkeys. The only left overs are the baked birds. I love a good fried turkey and the carcass makes a dang good turkey soup, especially if you add in some fried smoked deer sausage.

Either a chicken or better yet a smoked spiral cut ham.
