....Ends in a very nice 10 pointer. I guessed the age at 4.5 (you guys can take yours on the picture took) and i seriously had a hard time with this one. I hunt on family land and all of the hunters try to stay on the same page as far as what gets taken off. Ideally we don't shoot till 5.5 or older... unless we think its in the 150's or better. Which i hope this one is there. I haven't scored it - I am having the taxidermist score it for me.
He was at the feeder early and I hadn't seen him before Saturday morning. After eating in the feeder trap and made his way out I made a quick decision to shoot, he stopped in a sendero and I took it. I felt good with the shot but he ran to where I couldn't see him. Waited and then finally went to look. NO Blood, no tissue.. nothing... just some tracks of where he ran initially. After a couple back tracks and a quick prayer I found the rest of the tracks down a different trail and found him about 50 or so yards from where he was standing at the shot.
This is an Atascosa County buck for those wondering.

I would call him a 5 yr old and right around upper 140's to low 150's on score. 52-55 on tines and 93-95 on down frame. Really great looking buck. What part of Atascosa? I have place just south of the Atascosa County line but in Live Oak county.

Congratulations on a fine buck most will never see, much less shoot. It must be pretty nice to be able to struggle about the decision to shoot that deer. IMO it’s kind of strange you still have trepidation about taking that great animal because of what some number might end up being.

We are just South of Pleasanton on 37 at the FM 541 (Poth/McCoy) exit.

Thanks, and the hesitation to shoot has more to do with the "what will it become" than the "what it is". In my mind he was young enough to let walk - but now I'm extremely happy with my decision. We are on the MLD program and have seen a great increase in quality deer since everyone has gotten on the same page.
To be able to consistently tell a 5.5 yr. old is not possible... for me. Some deer at 5.5 look different ...exactly why P&W quite aging deer by teeth by year. P&W now ages young ..adult and mature. Not real sure the words are correct but still can't age on the hoof that easily. I would go to just calling them mature or not and still I can't be totally sure about age. Some leases will charge you a penalty ticket if the deer harvested does not look 5.5 yr. old. When you send the teeth off just to find the original aging was not correct. I do agree with "trying" to harvest a mature deer. Good practice and end result will pay off. Each hunting area could be different.
There would’ve been no debate with me. Great looking buck
