Is there anything else that will work to bring them lower. I have never hunted them but Saturday we had big groups flying over most of the day. Some one had mentioned trash bags or pillow cases

I've found cranes to be difficult to decoy and if you want to bring them in right they need to be very close to get good kill shots.

Those big suckers will look like they are right on top of you until you pop up and realize they weren't as close as you thought.

Deception full bodies or stuffers is the only way to go. I believe you'll be very frustrated trying to hunt over socks or silhouettes.

What he said...or a sneak up a creek or ditch by shooters and then 1 guy as a "driver" to push the birds over the shooters...sort of like pheasant hunting or jump shooting ducks...and don't forget to get a Federal crane permit...up side is on private land you can use real lead shot...up to buckshot...

I have been crane hunting since I was 13, and decoys are a must but don't expect them to come in like geese will "maybe early season they will", we always placed ourselves between the decoys and the direction we expected them to come from. They will come in lower to check out the decoys and fly right over you. My Dad always made us wait until they passed as the shot penetrates the feathers better from behind than coming on. They almost never came in and landed in the decoys "just to smart". I love hunting and eating crane, here in New Mexico we get greater's west of the mountains and they get up to 13, 14 pounds. Like shooting a turkey out of the sky.

I saw them on another forum several years ago, but I do not remember anyone ever saying how good they worked. I have also seen the flamingos painted to look like buzzards for Halloween decorations.

Hmm. Looking at cranes and then flamingos, I think it is possible. Paint the beak thinner and brown around the edges. Neck is a little long but may not be an issue.

I see cranes fly over my house in Weatherford every year, but I don't think they stop here more than a few hours if at all. Flamingos could solve one problem, now I just need a place to hunt them.

From his email, he used the 2" thick glued together for a 4" wide body. The head and neck were laminated using 1/4" plywood with 1" foam on each side and then shaped, The separate neck and head, was connected with a dowel only when being used. You can make about a dozen for around $100. 1 sheet of 2" foam board, 1 sheet of 1" foam board. a half sheet of 1/4" plywood, a 18oz bottle of Titebond II glue, old bed sheets and paint. His figures are guesses, he said he scrounges the foam and plywood at construction sites on a year round basis.

He did add it takes a little artistic ability to male the patterns and shape them. He uses a surefoam plane to shape the body.
