I’m wanting to purchase a light tower generator. If you have had experience with them I would love to hear your advice/ suggestions. -metal halide or LED bulbs? -6KW or 15KW? -any particular brand or model?

They are all over auction sites for around 1500 bucks. Most rental store run them to death them sell them wore out...
I wouldn’t buy one that didn’t have a Kubota Diesel engine in it. I own an equipment rental store and know a thing or two about them. Do you have any specific questions

WBurke2010, I’m looking at a 2011 Magnum 15 KW with metal halide lights and 315 hours and a 2017 6KW with LED light bars and 215 hours. Both around $9000 asking price. Wondering if the LED lights, later year model and lower hours would offset 6KW vs 15 KW

They are nice but metal halide bulbs I buy for 60 bucks a piece take a lot of bulbs to cover the additional cost of led. 15kw has always seemed over kill to me. What are you trying to use it for? And do you need it for just the lighting or for a generator as well?

Mostly for lighting, but after I began researching the idea of a nice big generator really appeals to me.

That price seems high to me but it could be because it’s a 15kw I run the basic 4kw light towers in my rental fleet. Where are you looking at buying from?

Gotcha. My opinion is if your just looking for lighting but a cheaper one, they are all over auction sites for 1500 -3000 for a 4kw one. The 2011 does have awfully low hours though.

I’m with wburke, that seems to be a lot of money for those units. I’ve never bought one but have rented quite a few.

I’m still in negotiations. What would be a good offer to make on that machine?

I don’t have much experience with the Mitsubishi diesel. All the light towers I buy have the Kubota engine. In small diesels no one builds a better engine than kubota imho

I was mistaken when I said Mitsubishi. I should have said Isuzu. Are you familiar with those Diesel engines?

I have owned a few Izuzu diesel and they are not bad engine. My preference would still be a kubota though. I do know a fair amount of bigger generators and light towers running the Izuzu engine and I did have some with it and didn’t have any issues with it. But parts and filters are harder to cross to better prices ones.

The one I’m looking at now is an Allmand ML20. 2008 with 1300 hours for $5K. Seems like a better deal than the one I was looking at previously.

That’s not a bad option. It has a 20kw generator. So it is more generator than light tower. If you looking for more of a light tower I think you could spend less and get as good a machine.

I found a nice clean low hour Baldor. It has a Kubota engine. $3400. Is this a good brand?

I haven’t seen a balder light tower but they make awesome generators so. Couple that with a kubota and I bet it is a good machine.

I’ve got an older light tower with a kubota Diesel engine. Engine runs great used the generator the other day. Flipped light switch on but nothing happened. It needs some TLC but I’d take $600 for it. You can PM me if interested.
