What do you keep in your hunting backpack?
With hunting public and having to walk in to where ever it is I'm hunting, I tend to put a lot of gear in my pack. Primarily because unlike a deer lease, if I knock something down, I am far away from the truck.
However, after my Saturday hunt on public, I gutted the bag. About the one item I wished I wouldn't have removed was the thermacell. But for the most part I lightned the load well.
What's in your pack?

I am usually mobile, using treestands and changing locations often so my pack is small and light weight. I use a water bladder to drink on stand with minimal movement. I have a GPS, compass, toilet paper, some protein bars, nitrile gloves for field dressing, paracord for a haul up rope, headlamp and extra batteries, and an extra small knife other than the one on my belt. I wear a set of binoculars in a holder on my chest along with my range finder. Other than my tree stand, that's about it.

If you are taking a lot of stuff start removing things as you don't use them. You'll find you don't need as much as you think you do and it will help keep you from taking out things you will need. Try to keep things that have multiple uses. It takes time to figure out what you really want in a bag. The list from jnd59 is pretty good.

Headlamp (2) Knife (2) water bottle / pee jug emergency crapper kit (as mentioned lol) rope bino range finder rain gear (small and light weight) small first aid compass whistle gloves face mask small snack (no loud wrappers)
I usually keep this gear in my backpack at all times and then push my hunter orange on top so when I get out of the truck all I have to do is put my orange on and go. In the SAM I use a combo of tree stand, ground blind, spot/stalk/sit. During dawn and dusk I hunt sitting still with tree climber or ground blind. When moving in or out, I go slow and try to explore more areas since I have only seen less than 1% of the forest.
