I'm trying to remember what my Mom put in her fruit salad but I'm not sure of everything she used. So far I remember
Crushed Pineapple
Diced Mandarin Oranges
Flaked Coconut
Chopped Pecans
Bananas
Marshmallow Cream
Guess I'll know when I mix it all up and taste it. I do remember as a kid that I always liked it better the second day.

Instead of marshmallow cream, I bet it was Cool Whip and added the small mini marshmallows. My mother-in-law made one like that, now it is my wife's version, but no recipe, she just throws it together.

My wife said to search "ambrosia salad" and to also look for "heavenly hash", she also said to add maraschino cherries, the bottled cherries, to your list.

The word “ambrosia” means delicious or fragrant. Ambrosia was also the magical fruit of the gods in ancient Greek mythology. The gods on Mount Olympus ate ambrosia to maintain immortality and without it, they became weak. In Homer’s Iliad, the gods bathed in ambrosia and used it as perfume. And, though we are free to enjoy ambrosia today, mythology dictated that mortals would face death if they dared to eat the gods’ ambrosia or drink their divine nectars. (Truth be told, some of my cousins did act like eating any dish containing coconut would absolutely kill them.)

It was definitely marshmallow cream. I remember her sending me to get her some at the last minute before Christmas one year. But I think your wife is right about the cherries!

In our discussion, my wife thinks she probably used the juice to thin the marshmallow cream. Her version is cans of the fruit as described, drain it, the refrigerate the fruit mix overnight, Saving the juice and also refrigerating it. Then the next day mix the fruit, pecans, and back to the fridge. Then about an hour before serving, you add the sour cream and the mini marshmallows and stir it up. If it is dry add a little of the saved juice. NOTE, not whip cream, it is SOUR CREAM....

2 cans of large pineapple tidbits 303 size can
2 cans of mandarin oranges
2 large 8 oz bottles of maraschino cherries, cut in half
1 1/2 cup pecan pieces
about 3/4 bag of mini marshmallows
1 tub sour cream

Coconut is optional, we do not use it.

She said to start here "5 cup salad" and go from there. https://www.eatingonadime.com/5-cup-salad-recipe/

Fruit salad is made from fresh fruit, not canned fruit. Well, canned mandarin oranges (drained) is allowed. Red and green apples in bite size chunks, peaches, plums, bananas, strawberries, cantaloupe, fresh pineapple, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. All of that is available this time of year and more. Mangos and kiwis, other tropical fruits if you wish. Pecan halves. No coconut, no dressing.

Prepare the salad the day before and toss it gently and refrigerate covered overnight. You can add fruit fresh if you like. Add mini marshmallows just before you serve it. Offer dressings on the side. Fresh whipped cream, coconut, Miracle Whip, honey. Use your imagination. Peanut butter thinned with honey, a raspberry balsamic glaze. It all sounds good, plus the salad is great without any dressing.

There will be no leftovers.

Save your canned fruit cocktail and the like for adding to jello.

gack! ... my wife and MIL love that stuff (fruit salad) but they typically add whipping cream and no coconut or pecans ... mandarin oranges, pineapple, apple, cherries and whipping cream is about all I can think that goes in it. there might be grapes in it too ... just shooting from memory of my wife, MIL or daughter making it. not for me
