Do ducks fly when it’s raining, any opinions. I’m thinking about trying to Friday and haven’t ever tried to hunt in the rain.

IMO, the worse the weather, the better the duck hunting. I've duck hunted in the mist, rain, low clouds, and very cold. When the clouds have a low ceiling, the ducks fly lower and come in easier, I think. I like duck hunting in the rough conditions. But I have the gear for it.

Thanks for the response y’all. I’ve hunted in some pretty bad weather but never a heavy rain, like the weather man says It’s suppose to be. I’ve only hunted 30 or 40 times.

Maybe I'm not as mad at them as I used to be, but I'd pass on a heavy rain. Been there done that and in my personal experience it's not worth it. Too much of a safety risk with lightning also.

Light rain/mist - most certainly I'd hunt.

Raining vs. a heavy rain is different. I probably would head to the cabin on a heavy rain. But misting or a light rain, I keep hunting. I've had some mornings on our place where it was misting and light rain with low clouds and birds were flying great.

One of the guys we hunt with is a champion duck caller. I've never seen anything like it. There have been birds way up high flying away from us. He'll recognize what duck they are and pull out one of his 20+ calls and turn the ducks right to us. Next thing you know they are coming in to land. He's good! I love hunting with him. And the more hunters in the blind the better. I need all the help I can getting more ducks down.

Heavy rain with thunder and lightening sucks.

Mist to light rain or intermediate rain can be good. But they are ducks and you never know what they are going to do.

Hunting during heavy rain chances are slim. But if a heavy rain is expected to break WHILE you are hunting then hell yes. As soon as the water stops the ducks turn on, especially if it's kept them hunkered down all night.

We hunted last Thursday in misty drizzle and we hammered the ducks

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

You don’t want to be on the water when there is lightening.

One things for sure. You won't kill any ducks sitting at home. But safety first.....6 ducks are never worth your life or sinking a boat.

Waste of time unless you’re on a pile of ducks on private.

I appreciate the input. It’s just me and my dog all my friends are deer hunters,so I’m still learning as I go. I tried to find any reason to miss work and go. I guess I will watch the weather Thursday night and see how bad the rain is going to be. Funny side note I practice calling on my hour commute to work and people passing sure give me some strange looks. Lol

I get trying to find any reason to go - but as someone who has been duck hunting for 20+ years and a total weather nerd - unless you're hunting private land and you're driving up to your hunting spot (or walking in on public) - don't be putting a boat in Friday morning. 1. Cold front is coming through around 2-5 AM depending on where you're at in N Texas - N winds will be strong behind that front (I'd bet a decent chunk of cash they'll be gusting much higher than the 10mph that is currently forecast) 2. There's going to be enough instability for stronger storms (lightning and wind) - you don't want to be caught out on the water with ANY amount of lightning and a surprise storm with high winds can get lethal real quick on these N TX lakes

If you're hunting private property or walking in that's one thing and I'd probably watch the weather or heck sit in the truck until the weather has passed.

But if you're putting a boat into N Texas public water - I wouldn't even consider risking it and I'd enjoy sleeping in. Your life and your dogs ain't worth a few ducks. Happens every year up here - someone becomes another statistic. Don't be that guy.

Hey Cochise, I appreciate it. I didn’t think it was gonna be that bad. I won’t hunt if it’s lightning, something about holding a piece of steel just doesn’t sit right with me.

Was hunting a slough a few years back when a good storm rolled in. Our blind floor was about a foot under water. It was about a 200 yd walk through knee deep water, in any direction to get out of the slough. Not a good feeling when the lightning started.

I've hunted in blowing snow and had one the best days ever in the marsh, but still prefer the way they fly when its windy out of the north and blue skies.
