So looking at updating the wifes tahoe... Not buying a new one.. stupid money.. but what are your thoughts on mileage on used cars? Is 80,000 or so miles to much on a clean used car that is 4-5 years old? What do yall think on the mileage thing.. presuming the car is in good shape..

I traded in two pickups with under 50,000. They are out there.

I've driven 150k mile trucks that ride and drive better than 60k trucks. It's all in how they were taken care of.

Having said that, 100k is still a benchmark for all cars, when little things start to pop up, and will nickel and dime you to the nut house. Alternators, water pumps, fuel pumps, wheel bearings... all these things are wear items, and 100-150k is usually where they go. A buddy of mine bought a 60k mile Tahoe, and just rolled 200k on it. He had to replace a couple wheel bearings, and alternator, but a pretty reliable vehicle overall.

All depends on how it was maintained which is a crapshoot on a used car.

Buy a Toyota. I wouldn't touch a high mileage GM.

How many miles does she put on per year?

I would think a Tahoe would be good for 200k or so. I would keep it under 75k that way she will still have several years of life left on the vehicle.

My old Chevy Silverado has 275k. My other Silverado currently has 165k. They will last.

12k miles a year for normal driving. 4-5 years old, 48k to 60k. Anything over that I would check the car fax, I haven’t owned anything American. I’ve had great records with all my vehicles

Agreed. I bought my 2500HD three years old with 28K miles/one owner. OP, not sure what your budget is but I bought my 2015 tahoe LT loaded 2 years old with 15k miles and it was in the 38k range. New was around 50k.

depends on how the previous owner drove, town driving..not, if you can look at how it was maintained and had mostly highway miles would be my choice, my.02

My son's 07 F150 just hit 300k, 4.6 V8. I don't think we ever did any repairs to that truck.
I sold my 06 F150 Lariat when it hit 250k, only thing I did to it was coil packs and 1 exhaust manifold.
My SIL's 2005 Chevy 2500 is around 325k, transmission was replaced at 60k. He still pulls 7k with it pretty regular.
I have a 2013 Cadillac CTS I am about to sell, 174k. I had to replace the front seal on the trans and the AC system.
When I sold my 2007 Dodge 5.9 dually it had 285k, I replaced a water pump and clutch, the motor still had almost 0 blow by.

If it is halfassed maintained (oil changes at least every 10k) I would expect to get 250-300k out of a modern Tahoe.

My last ticket was 3 or 4 years ago, I knocked the LP off one my trailers and DPS wasn't impressed with my explanation. Found the LP, paid the $10 and that was that. laugh

15k a year is now considered average, on a Tahoe 80k on a 4-5 year old vehicle is considered low/average. I would have no issues buying one with that mileage IF it was a one owner and even more so if maintenance history is there. If you want I don't mind doing some research on any of the particular ones you are looking at just shoot me the VIN in a PM.

And aside from brand loyalty, out of all the major players none are better than the other, PERIOD! All the brands have POS and all can be reliable, generally in the build and maintenance.
