Just found out the hard way. That SD cards have a data lock on them. Camera would not take pictures and could not delete the old pic's. Figure Id bring the SD card home and reformat the card with laptop. I found the little switch on the side.

I would bet most of us have but wouldn't admit it! I just realized this myself, but that wasn't the problem.

My biggest issue is forgetting to reformat each time I empty an SD card.

I’ve accidentally flipped them to locked a couple of times when I put the cards in the camera. Now I use tape and tape the card in the unlocked position.

Thanks,
Rich

We been just deleting the DCIM folder and seems to work. Is that the same as reformatting?

Your camera should have a format option.ni format when I put a different card in. Make sure you've copied the pictures you want first.

Gotta go through the options each time you put a card back in the camera. Find the option that says something like "format card", select it, and let the camera do it itself. Not a big deal if you only have one or two cameras of the same manufacturer, but it can be an issue if you have a bunch of different cameras and different cards.

Why they put that dadgum little switch on there in the first place is a mystery.

That's what I've always done as well. Since I always view my pics/videos on my computer, when finished I just open the DCIM file and delete it. That erases all pics/videos and formats the card. Ready to use again.

Formatting is a more complete way of erasing the files on an SD card as opposed to deleting them. It assigns a new file system to the card and makes it ready to use on next device. The few times that I have had corrupt sd cards was when I re-used cards without removing all the files or formatting disk. I usually format on pc by right clicking on e: drive, I need to figure out how to do it on my iPhone reader.

On your computer, after looking at pics and moving to whatever folder you want, right click on removable disk that's your SD card. Then click on format, a screen will pop up, hit start, and it'll ask if you're sure because that erases all data on your card.

Many cameras will format the card themselves. I don't ever format the card and haven't had problems with it.

Some people I know put a small dot of super glue on the lock tab in the unlocked position to prevent future problems.

Recently we have been having some compatibility problems. We have 2 brand new moltrie cammeras with 16GB cards. you have to try forever to get our old laptop to open and read one of those new cards. Put and old card in the same camera and it works fine. Put the new card in an old camera and it has issues. Put the new card in a new laptob and it works like a charm.

Had the exact same problem with a 16gb card, both a new and a 3 or 4 year old laptop. Never could get it to open, figured it was corrupted, and chunked it. Keeping it to 8gb cards from now on, never had a problem with them.
