Travel out of state for the "experience"

or

Kill one in Texas????

I have found a good outfitter in Utah, fly into Salt Lake City, rent a car . I have it from a good source, it costs around $400 to ship meat and hide to me.

Thoughts from the forum?

I recommend a natural setting, wherever you go.

Years ago I shipped a cooler with half a boned out elk on ice in cooler as checked baggage. Did have hide in cooler, but took it out. It was just too heavy to carry.

Having taken cow elk both in-state and out, I'm of the opinion that minimizing my travel to do this is the best answer.

For me, it's a meat hunt...I view it like going to HEB with a rifle.

Utah sure would be pretty, though!

Tri State Outfitters just had a cancellation on cow elk in northern New Mexico.
Good outfit and pretty country. Much closer and I bet cheaper.

You might also try Kiowa Outfitters. I hunted with them last year on Vermejo Park Ranch and had a great time. They may already be booked up though.

Stay in Texas! Come on over to our ranch, we've got big fat elk cows for 1,400.00, all inclusive, remember the elks natural range includes Texas.
Its thick, rocky, and cold here, you can always find a hunt "cheaper", come out and enjoy our fire pit, the game and silence, and the history only found on the north mill, thirty minutes south of junction, family owned and operated for 27 years.

Goodnight! Is $1,400 the going rate, now?

Never been on elk hunt. Have no idea what a good price is.

But 1400 sounds like a great deal. Here in Texas too

For a cow, I’d never leave Texas...

Trophy or even bull that’s different

$1400 inclusive is solid.

Why do so many always want to stay in TX?

Experience some new country and new people.

Even NM is a cool experience and it’s not far away.

If you hunt a private ranch, do you need to put in for tags? I'm ignorant on how this system works

It depends. In Texas, there are no tags. Elsewhere, a lot of properties will have landowner tags. You buy that, the hunt, etc. If they don’t, or they allow you to hunt there without a LO tag, then you’ll need a tag from the state, which will either be drawn or over the counter, depending on the unit.
