You know you're going to have to build.
There will be one or two things you don't like in each good one you find. Build it with all the parts you like.
Barrel, fluted steel or carbon wrap. Quit at 16" at the crown.
If I were building, it would be a 7mm-08, and may just rebarrel mine for it. Wilson Combat and Kreiger make that barrel.

Aero has a hell of a sale going on the M5 Enhanced upper and M5E1 lower....I just ordered a set from Venture Firearms (good guy and great prices on Aero stuff). JG and I have been talking about a 7-08 AR10 for a year or more....I'm done talking, it's started

I had a Christensen Arms AR10 in 308 that was the lightest AR10 I've handled and it was also the most accurate. Sold it back to the guy I bought it from. In your case BIL, I'd build so you can get exactly what you want.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

Please, for my sake and everybody else’s, let somebody else build it, reload for it, and shoot it. I think you’re 0-2 with gas guns.

A lot of suppliers have brought to market the DPMS GII barrels (special extension).
DPMS won’t come down on the prices of the receiver and BCG - I ain’t paying 350 for a BCG...
Need an aftermarket option for these GII small frames and BCG compatible with DPMS GII
This space is For Sale - inquire within ...

2A Arms Xanthos Lite receiver set and handguard, Faxon 16” Big Gunner or Pencil barrel. This will give you a solid foundation and shaves weight in the key areas.

Wilson Combat my 18" 308 was wicked accurate with many loads and never ever had any issues whatsoever. I replaced the barrel with a 20" 6mm Creedmoor to try it out but the 18" 308 isn't going anywhere.
