Just got back from opening week in Edwards County. Saw a lot of deer but very few nice bucks. Mostly 1-2 year olds.

A lot of acorns falling and still on the trees. Not eating much corn right now.

Give me your feedback on your place so far this year.

Thanks,

Same here. Not a record year for acorns, but enough to divert the deer from the corn.

Bosque County and more Acorns then anything else. Corn stacked on ground a foot high and very little movement going on during day. Lots of movement with this Moon.

Not much is coming to our feeders here in north Texas

Similar situation in Coleman County. Saw a decent amount of deer, but my most productive feeder has turned into the least productive. I'm guessing it's due to the close proximity of acorns. Saw several deer pass right on by the feeder on Saturday despite a pile of corn on the ground.

Cass county, lots of acorns, corn under feeder. Turned off evening feed and turned down morning feed. Hunted six days and only saw one yearling go to feeder one time.
They are hitting the food plots but not the corn at all.

Pretty much sums it up for us too.

I am with you just west of Boonesville by the Wise/Jack line. Havent seen a deer at my feeder there in two weeks. I watch it every morning and evening from my kitchen window. Its about 700 yards on the side of a rolling hill, prior to season I would have 6 to 8 every feeding.

I guess what they say it true: a picture is worth a thousand words. That picture tells it all.

Southeast Stephens County. Lots of acorns. Still seeing bucks. They seem to come by looking for does, grab a few bites of corn and move on. The young bucks still seem to like the corn and hang around. Not seeing many does right now.

If the deer are hitting the acorns, hunt the oak trees
If the deer are hitting the band corn areas then hunt there
If the deer are hitting the feeders then hunt the feeders....
And on and on it goes.

Hunt states or public land in Texas where feeders are not allowed, and you learn the food sources or travel routes and where to hunt those deer to be successful. Same can be applied to hunting private land when the deer are not hitting the feeders.

back

Years corn stacked up like in Paralax22 picture above, at my lease they deer did not hit the feeders good until the last week of season and after I had cleaned the corn off the ground and fed now corn there.

Rut on our place should be starting next week - I plan to hunt a big valley that backs up to hills on 3 sides - bucks will be moving (I hope)!

Especially through October and November. Deer go through a Obligatory Weight Response where the body tries to convert what they eat to fat...before the harsher winter conditions occur. So eating acorns (already high in fat) is to their advantage.

Where I am...the hogs get the acorns before the deer have a chance in many instances. Also, deer tend to browse through a feeding area.....whereas Hogs will stay and 'hoover' up every acorn they can find before moving on.

Sitting in the tree stand this morning it sounded like it was raining, it was acorns falling. I shook the tree I was in and you could here them drop. Does are stopping by the feeder every once in a while eating a few kernels before being chased by some buck.

I haven't had deer come to any of my feeders yet. Acorns are everywhere.

Acorns are thicker than gravel on a gravel road. We see some deer come to corn but it is usually just a few minutes and then they move on.

I’m in N Texas in Lamar County and there are acorns everywhere and feeder activity is very light. Like someone else said, they seem to be bigger this year also.

The corn under my 6 feeders looks like a gold mine.

I've watched bucks walk right by the feeders regularly. They are in full rut now, and not worried about corn anyway.

If it were me, and I was playing the waiting in the blind game, I would put out a doe decoy with a white rag strip taped on the butt soaked in some doe estrous scent........or spot and stalk the oak motts with the sun on my back and a nice cross wind......

In east Coleman county I have my feeders turned down very low and a few deer are eating corn while others pass by and ignore. Young bucks are zig zagging back and forth with noses to the ground looking for a scent. This weekend the rut should be going.
