I'm looking to get into long range shooting and wanted to have some insight on rifle options. I dont wanna spend crazy money like the pros. Cause well I'm not a pro and probably wouldnt get the guns full potential anyway, but to start learning I would like to build something on a budget, would I be better off getting something like a savage with a threaded barrel or would I be better off going with a gun like the roger rpr? Not expecting to be given a list of what to buy just some help on whether it's better to get a decent cheap gun and add to it or get one of those budget precision rifles any advice is appreciated thanks in advance

To add to it, I do have a Thompson center venture 270, a roger american 30 06 and a dpms lr308 would I be better off spending the money I was gonna use on a new rifle to upgrade one of these?

There’s many good options. Ruger, Remington, Beragra,Tikka and other good factory rifles can shoot really well. Most can shoot 1/2 to 3/4 with good ammo. You can upgrade the barrel on a factory rifle for about $900-$1200.

The main thing is feeding it good ammo tuned to the rifle. That will allow the greatest accuracy improvement.

Like Chad said, there's lots of good, affordable rifles that are capable. Ammo is literally 1/3 of the system.

And you can't hit, what you can't see. And there's never been a better time as far as availability of scopes capable of great things. Allocated at least $1k for scope, and $200 for base and rings. I can literally fasten a $1k scope to a $500 rifle, give it good ammo, and be repeatedly hitting thousand yard steel by lunch time, without rushing.

Standard question here.
What is long range for you, what are you using it for? Paper, steel, hunting?

I've been out to etts because I dont really have land to shoot on but until I'm able to do their qualifier for the 1000 yd range I'm limited to 200, I was actually planning on taking instruction from firemanjg with the new build but i want to make sure I have a good setup before getting any shooting instruction lol and it would be pretty much be to push myself to be able to shoot at 1000 when I go to the range, I know the gun itself is only part of the equation and I have to do my part as well, I have started reloading for my 308 but far from knowing how to fine tune my ammo to my gun,

I've got a scoped, supressed, hand loaded rental rifle. Heavy as hell 7mm-08, and everyone that shoots it loves it. The point of that rifle is your exact scenario. Learn to drive a good machine, and you're more educated buying your own machine. If you're a hand loader already, we can talk about all that the same day.

If you wanted to start out, you could set up your 30-06 for some practice with the right scope. Feed it some good ammo with a 155 grain or 175/178 grain match bullet and that would get you started. If you worked up a good load, you could easily get that rifle to work for you as a start. It has a 1:10" twist, and you can feed it most any 30 cal bullet you want and it work fine. If you need something, let me know. The DPMS 308 would work, but it would have more limitations than the 30-06, IMO.

I first got into long range shooting with my 270. It worked for what I wanted. But a good heavy barrel rifle will outperform it though.

Love that rifle feels like it was made for me.

Save yourself the time, and money over a semi custome, and grab a Tikka CTR in 6.5CM. It is stupid accurate, tons of great factory ammo available for .5 MOA accuracy, and if you load it is easy, easy, easy to load for with a variety of bullets.

Sounds like a win. I don’t think you can go wrong. Although I’ve never met Garvey everyone that has gives very positive feedback. There has to be something to that.

I’m a big Remington fan because it’s the small block Chevy of the gun world more aftermarket support than all the other rifle manufacturers combined.

I also have a friend with the Ruger Precision rifle and it’s a laser with box ammo he’s shot out to 600 with moa performance it’s a great rig..

FiremanJG has a point with the optics remark, if it doesn’t say nightforce on it I would not buy it.. there are some other good scopes out there but nightforce holds up to repeated use running them up and down..

^^Out of the box rifle, it's my top pick.

Ruger Precision Rifle is also a god choice, but it will be heavier than the Tikka, which might not be ideal carrying it hunting.

And as was mentioned, the 6.5 Creedmoor might be the easiest cartridge on the planet to hand load for.

Remington 700’s are the small block Chevys of the gun world because they need the huge aftermarket support to make them worth a chit.

Remington 700 vs Tikka out of the box is like a Chevy cavalier vs a fine Italian sports car.

By the way JG is a tard I’ll charge you 1/4 of the price for a 1/4 of the learning.

1/8th, you meant 1/4 for 1/8th, just sayin.

I bought 2 academy specials with the scopes punted on them.. they shot better than a custom
Pic attached and yes they were 6.5 creedmoor first 3 shots on the right, minor scope adjustment and 3 more.. I’d like to see a tika do that with $18.99 a box ammo...
Tika is a slick rig, well worth the money if you like the very few stocks available and the trigger that comes in them.

They will.

And they don't need their trigger replaced like a Rem 700 does. The 70° bolt throw is nice, as well. So is the side bolt release, as opposed to the bottom bolt release in a Rem 700.

I’ve almost bought one several times, I agree it’s the best out of the box gun you can buy

So, you're basing an Academy special to out shoot a custom rifle from 3 shots? Yes, your group looks great. But I can promise you an Academy special with cheap ammo will not out shoot a custom rifle with tuned ammo. I would never base a claim on 3 shots at 100 yards. Put that Academy special through it's paces up against a custom, and you'll have your hat handed to you, I promise.
