I’m thinking of going Tuesday. Supposed to by 25 degrees. I don’t really like the cold. I put a little buddy and tanks in 2 blinds.

My question is, do y’all fire these heaters up in the dark? Or freeze until it’s light enough to not glow.
I’ve done both. And prefer to be warm from the first minute.

This issue of lighting up the blind gave me the idea to make blackout panels out of home theatre curtain material I velcro over my windows. Drink my coffee and eat breakfast with the heater in the AM and eat dinner, iPad movies etc in the blind at night. I started with sections of plastic yard waste bags I cut to size and tape above the windows.

I just dress warm don’t care for the heaters. For us if it’s that cold the deer typically don’t move well.

My hunting days are so limited, if I have a chance to go,I go.

I will turn the burner towards a wall if I have too, I think it is the shadow movement that is the worst part of it, doubt the red glow itself is very alarming.

This is kind of my thinking. You watch all these shows from the mid-west and the colder western states and they always say "this cold snap will have them out and moving." But, it's been my experience here in Texas that for the most part our deer are not used to the cold, and when it gets down into the lower 30s or below, they just hunker down until it warms a little. For instance, I didn't see hardly any deer out moving around when the last cold front came through, but the first day that the sun was back out and it was 55 degrees out, the deer were everywhere.

Now having said that, if I only have a certain time period to hunt, and it's going to be that cold, I will still have my butt in the blind. I layer like crazy, have hand and feet warmers, and hot black coffee and sit it out.

I'm 70, I turn the heater on as soon as I get into the stand. And honestly, I have never noticed deer looking up at the
stand when or because the heater was on. I also drop my wife off at the stand, light the heater and then drive about
300 yards away. Walking back in the dark, I have never noticed a "red glow" on the windows or been able to see her
in the stand. Now, my windows are tinted, so that might help block out the glow a little.

I'm under the impression that deer can't see red light. So I dont think it matters. I could be wrong.

I tend to agree with those who say deer will often stay bedded when it gets really cold much like we sometimes do ourselves. There have been many times on clear and very cold mornings when I didn't start seeing deer until the temperatures had warmed a bit.

It's the rainy, wet cold that always seems to get them moving best. I suspect the wet conditions not only encourages them to stay off the ground but also makes them lose body heat more quickly.

Like someone else said my hunting days are limited and I like hunting in the cold I go if I can.
