I’d assume so based off the caliber. Unless you mean 243

It's a 6mm Remington with a 1:12 twist.

If it is marked .244 it is pre 1962

In 1963 it was renamed 6mm for the new 700 model.

And the twist was changed to shoot heavier bullets as noted above. It’s a little faster than the .243. As far rare, it is somewhat. Rare and desirable is often two different things. I know you didn’t ask but $325-425 depending on condition.

I had a 740 in .30-06 for a while. I enjoyed the gun. You have to watch for wear on the inside of the chamber from the slide movement. Once you get wear there, it doesn't cycle quite right. Out of the cartridges the gun was made for, the .244 is the most unique and made the most sense and the caliber did less damage to the overall gun. They are much more popular in eastern states where a semi-auto is more highly sought after for deep woods hunting where follow up shots are more often needed. Whether it's valuable or not - probably not. I sold my .30-06 for $325. You might get a little more or less depending on the model type and demand for it. It's a cool gun regardless.

That’s a cool gun, great caliber too....

Glad a few people have done there homework.

That’s a collectible gun IMO.... not just another $250 30-06 in a 740

I agree that it is a collectible gun and a very cool gun. I was simply letting him know what I got for a similar gun. I am not a firearms collector or expert. He needs to do his own research on the value. I know from the research I did that most of the 740s I saw listed in multiple places were not overly sought after. It is very possible that he could get a little more. However, a cool gun like that - I would want to hold onto unless I just HAD to get rid of it.

I believe you misinterpreted my intent.

I would never talk down to a stranger....

That was just a general statement about the gun and it’s value.

I sincerely apologize if my statement offended you.

Great topic. Brings back the past to me as a kid on a South Texas deer lease. Camp fire talk about the cartridges, the 6mm Rem new! The talk would have been about bolt guns though.

No worries! I wasn't offended. It's really hard to tell intent (on both ends) when all you have is a keyboard to express it. grin
