How are the pheasant numbers looking for this year in the panhandle and south plains regions? I had heard that numbers were pretty bad up north because of the spring floods followed by a hot, dry summer.

Had friends down for a Labor Day dove shoot from the Hale Center / Petersburg / Floydada area. They farm about 10K acres spread across 3 counties and they aren't seeing much. Quail are mediocre and pheasants below that. Got another friend up there that's a crop duster. His business picks up around now and if there are any birds around he'll know where they are. I'll post up whenever I get a report from him.

The years that the crop dusters have to remove pheasant bodies from the applicator nozzles...those are amazing hunting years...

Our guy in the Panhandle says cover and forage are very good and birds are doing well.

Thanks.
Spoke with some folks up there again today that said rainfall had been very good this year.
Birds were decent where we hunted last year.

Look for a pack of bird dogs and slow moving hunters on the 7th.

I live on the southern edge of pheasant country in the south plains. Rain we got early on did wonders in our area and I had several pheasants in my yard daily. Later in the spring I saw a few hens with chicks in the area. I would think it would be a decent year especially compared to last year. The quail around my house have exploded in numbers but I also keep them fed pretty good.

We're going to be up there Thanksgiving week. Mostly ducks but we have a guide for pheasant one day. We're starting at the bottoms for ducks, north east for pheasant and then pick a lake south ks for ducks again.

We may spend some afternoons walking up birds.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS

Three of us walked behind four dogs Nov 16, 17,18 in Lincoln County, KS, mostly private land. All the milo was already cut. Lots of hay rolled up on CRP. Edge cover was thick. Weather was warm, dry, and windy. Bird numbers were low; put up 3-7 rooster pheasant and moved 1-2 coveys of quail per day.

Also talked to friends who hunted north and southwest of Lincoln County. Both had similar reports.

Our guy in the Panhandle says lots of birds being spotted this week.

We will take the field Saturday morning, opening day.

I'm thinking I may need a shotgun for each shoulder.

Thirteen hunters harvested 31 pheasant and several quail.
Many more roosters seen than taken, my luck was nearly every bird that flushed for me was a hen.
Got some good dog work.

We had four coveys of quail.
So fun.
