I shot a cull buck yesterday and was surprised to see that he was still in velvet. I know that I have 3 other bucks running around in the same condition.

Is this common for central TX?

Typically...the majority of bucks will have a hard (no velvet) antler by Sept. 1st. A few might still be in velvet a week or two later...but I've never seen an uninjured buck in velvet past Sept.

No, not this time of year. They might be sterile, and that means velvet all the time in most cases.....

Llano/Mason counties . Granite country. We call them “stags” probably have shrunken or no testicles. They grow very unique antlers and never rut. I’ve spoken with biologists that say they are not sure exactly what causes it. Some theorize that during drought like conditions, they eat something that causes sterilization. I’ve seen typical racks, and very crazy looking ones.

Saw 10 point Sunday morning that still had probably 90% of his velvet. It was dry and part of it was hanging off. No idea why he hasn’t rubbed it off.

^^ This. I've seen this on several occasions. My previous boss shot a nice buck with velvet antlers that were not hard. The antlers were softer and would break off if you pulled on them. The buck had a nice big rack, but was in velvet and the deer had no nuts.

Sw Llano as in Castell area?

Yes stags. We kill a ton of them. Awesome eating. Eating lichens causes underdeveloped nuts.

Note to self, "Don't eat the lichens"

I picked him in July as the first one to go as I didn't want him breeding. Turned out he was a stag with a couple of bumps for testicles, kind of like how I imagine Washington National fans sport...

The Llano paper had a great article on this phenomenon, however I just wasn't sure how wide spread this condition was.

Even in drought years the stags has a nice layer of fat. They don’t rut, they are the steers of the feed yard.

Best venison you can find
