So, off I went this morning to do just that. But only one small yearling showed up. And then one legal odd-racked 6 point, but no, wait for a doe. The wife does not like gamey buck meat. Then, out of nowhere comes the biggest racked buck I have ever seen on this place. I was so shocked at the size of the antlers, I didn’t even count points. Grabbed the rifle, flicked the safety off, put the crosshairs on him....and let him walk. I think he was a 10. Marvelous. Maybe the grandson will get him later.

But....I’ll tell ya...that big rascal better not parade in front of me again. I just don’t know if I could pass on him again.

No doe moving this morning, so I’ll go out again before noon. Yesterday I said the rut didn’t appear to be on quite yet. Well, it’s on full blast today. No doubt about it.

If it was that big I would have shot the buck without hesitation.

if you had you would still be in the same position you are in now, but with a nice trophy buck to admire

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Either you love or fear your wife way more than most?

I once passed on the biggest buck I had ever seen only because my daughter was going to hunt with me that afternoon and next morning. We saw him again but she could not get a shot off.

Hope you or your grandson get a good opportunity at him up

Just out of curiosity did you tell your wife what happened and if so what did she say?

I passed a big mature 9pt yesterday. I told my brother he could shoot it. Of course the 2 bucks that he saw were ones I would consider shooting. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

I’ve never passed on a deer for someone else. Way too many stories of never seeing them again

I did tell the wife about the big buck. She does not want to work hard processing a buck, and she restated that. I told her that, if it’s a 10, and I get a shot, I’m taking him. If it’s an 8, I’ll let him walk. He can be my herd bull, like the one I had a few years back. That one was a 9, and I passed on him for 3 years. I wanted a good herd bull, and he wasn’t a 10. I finally gave up on his ever being a 10, and shot him.

Must shoot a doe. Must shoot a doe. Must remain focused.

Shoot him. She’ll get over it.

He’s a 9 point. Saw him this morning, at 40 yards. He was traveling with about 8 doe. The rack is a very good 8, with a double brow tine on the right side. I shot one of the larger doe.
