On this day in 1891 construction began on the Pecos Viaduct. It was highest in US and third highest in world at one time. Judge Roy Bean acted as coroner of those who died during its construction.

Just down stream a bit is the Pecks River Bridge which is highest in Texas. If you are ever heading down 90 between Del Rio and Langtry, pull over and see what marvels men can create to overcome barriers. It’s a beautiful sight.

Also on this date in 1930 Braniff Airways went public. It finally folded after several tries to reboot in the80s and 90s. But at one time was 6th largest air carrier.

I hunt my dad's land just shy of Langtry we pass over that bridge when we go hunting. I described that area as rugged beauty. We were down there Friday Doing last-minute things. Visibility was so good I could see the Mexican mountains clearer than I ever had. [Linked Image]

This is the old bridge before the new one was built. Somewhere I have a picture of the wagon crossing, that was there before this and others were built.

Yes dogcatcher, thank you so much for the visuals. Those are fascinating pics. What hard men built in hard lands. It is a testament to their determination and drive. Risk was a naturally accepted cost of progress.

Since you hunt in that area you need to read up and do a photo tour of the White Shaman Preserve. It is located east of the High Bridge, I believe you have to have reservations.

A look at the bridge according to Google.

I've only seen what has been posted on youtube about that sight. I hear they hace some in the El Paso area as well. I've been on a history of america pre-columbian binge of late. From the great ice age 13000 years ago. I realized I didn't know much at all from that time to the1500s.

Isn't there a abandoned WWII gun emplacement at the old bridge?

I fed the ranch east of the railway bridge for awhile. Yes, you can find different stuff indicating a military presence in that area. The road from the old bridge is still visible passing, on the west side of the new bridge. Seminole Canyon State Park (currently closed) is just east of the bridge by a couple of miles. Lots of history in that area.

They took the signs down to the park didn't they? I was looking for the signs last week and didn't see them. Though maybe I just missed them. I though my dad was crazy for buying land out there, but I've become a fan.

Have went over that bridge going to my in-laws property for many years. While it's an amazing sight I don't miss it at all. One tire blowout and it's all over eek2

You ain't lying! My nephew, and I were on our way back, and about one quarter of the way on the bridge. When a lady driving an eighteen wheeler crossed almost all the way over into our lane. Her passenger steer tire was the only part still in her lane! I did the only thing I could do and slammed on the brakes. We were in the old jeep grand cherokee with the backseat down, and all our gear in the back. The ice chest and all our gear slammed into the back of our seats, almost causing us to lose control. Luckily she put her eyes back on the road, and yanked the the truck back into her lane. She was too busy looking at the beautiful canyon, to notice she had crossed over into our lane. Man there is no outs once you commit to crossing.

That's insane. I always made it a habit to not start across that bridge until I knew there were no vehicles coming the other way.

We crossed that bridge on motorcycles in a blinding rain several years ago. It is WAY up there.

Thanks for the great pictures. I went over the Bridge years ago and it was a thrill.

Some of that might go back to the Mexican American War, 1846-1848 or during Pancho Villa's era of 1917-1917. The Columbus Raid by Villas' forces caused some military build up along the southern border, and invasion of Mexico by General Pershing It was during a time that US forces were training for the War in Europe, and a lot of the training was done in Texas, and New Mexico.
