The camera has a small sensor and at max power on the zoom the quality will be weak

What Doug says is true but back off the zoom a little and it does fairly well. I'm running a P-900 and a 1000 with most of my shots and video running well past 500 yards and usually have more zoom than I need. Back off 10% and it makes a difference.

Do you gain much going from the P900 to the P1000? Also want to buy one and was leaning towards the 1000 strictly because it is the newer model. The 900’s are so much cheaper though. Strictly a camera for sports and wildlife.

My needs are for a camera capable of long shots, short shot's and quick shot's, either of those cameras fill the bill. You gain everywhere going to the bigger camera (and it is bigger in body and zoom capabilities) except the sensor, something a few of the blogs are saying will be addressed in the next camera. Were it me I'd go with the 900, the 1000 is much bigger and not as handy, you need a good rest or a tripod to really take advantage of it.

Hi
Doug's brother Joel here.
The 1000 is HUGE, but the zoom is 125x. The sensor is small, that's how they get the big zooms. Most people don't need anywhere need this kind of zoom
Think of it as a full footballl field including the end zones.
That's 120 yards. With the 1000 a person at one end would look about 1 yard away with the 1000, With the 900, 83x zoom the subject would appear 1.;5 yards away. My favorite is the Sony DSC-HX400. It has a Zeiss lens, better processor and has a50x zoom, camera is smaller. My opinion it's the best in its class. The subject would appear 2.4 yards away, still amazing

Joel
