Reports just coming in that NCAA voted today they will begin the process to allow student athletes to be compensated for their image and likeness.

Welcome to the new age of college athletics. Powerhouse schools will have distinct recruiting advantages if they show an ability to provide material benefits for their star players. Likewise, will this mean certain star athletes might go to smaller schools in big markets where they know they will get significant face time being the big fish in a small pond?

Opinions?

The way it should be. Most fair way to do it. Schools paying players would never work very well. I’m sure the NCAA will muck it up somehow, but this is a huge step in the right direction.

I have paid lots of college athletes in my time. They got a free (or partially free) education because of me. Momma might as well have a new car or two, so just keep heaping it on I guess until it reaches the sickening level (and then they'll try to pull it back).

Good for the kids. Terrible for college football.

Any bets of how many hundreds of new youtube channels get started within the next month by college athletes?

So they just removed all roadblocks to cheating on the recruiting trail. Great.

That was really the point of my post...will this be used as a positive or negative to recruiting big name athletes (think more basketball than football) and will folks go for a big fish in a small pond mentality where they can "cash in" being "THE man" or will they go more for the team aspect and not worry about being "THE man" in a bigger campus?

Obviously my post is sexist toward men, but same applies to women athletes as well....

So how much of a cut will the NCAA take out of the earnings?

Looks like the NCAA needed California a lot more than California needed the NCAA.

Thanks,

The folks in Alabama are in for a rude awakening because it adds a much bigger driver when it comes to deciding where to play. Saban gets the cream of the crop now because money and markets don't influence a kid's decision. Or to put it another way, who the hell will want to play for a school in redneck Alabama when the real money is to be made playing for the schools in the largest markets. Just consider which schools sell the most T-shirts and other apparel and you get the idea.

I think it has an impact on recruiting, but Alabama still has the most to offer kids because they are still the best team in the country and kids playing there will have national exposure. It’s not like SMU is all of the sudden going to steal Alabama recruits because they’re in Dallas. Alabama will still get the players they would otherwise get and need. Maybe a few less three and four star recruits but it will even out.

I think you're underestimating the power of the almighty dollar. If a kid can make more money, even when the school is having a tough season, they're not going to care who's coaching the team or where they are in the Top 25.

IMO, Alabama has to stay where they are competitively to stay where they are in the merchandising battle. But that could be a tough row to hoe with so many other schools now being able to leverage their much larger consumer markets.

"For the eighth straight year, the University of Texas collected the most royalties of any college or university represented by the Collegiate Licensing Company, whose clients include all the major schools except Ohio State, Michigan State, University of Southern California and Oregon.

SEC schools dominated the top 10 in royalty rankings released by the company on Monday.

The University of Alabama came in second, followed by Kentucky (5), LSU (6), Florida (7), Georgia (8) and Arkansas (10), which broke the top 10 for the first time. Notre Dame (3), University of Michigan (4) and UNC (9) rounded out the top 10."

Edit to clarify: I don’t understand the royalties point. The schools aren’t paying the kids. The kids are allowed to make money off their likeness, such as having a YouTube channel, or selling t-shirts they designed, or showing up at a summer camp. UT has the biggest or one of the biggest alumni bases. That’s not the same as the exposure Tua has gotten over Sam Ehlinger has because Alabama is better than Texas and gets more exposure.

Edit #2: there seems to be some confusion overall. The athletes won’t make royalties from the school selling jerseys or anything else. It has nothing to do with that.

My original response:

Dan, If the kids and their families are savvy, and I’m not saying all of them are, then they would understand the trade off and the gift just given to them by the states and NCAA.

You go to Alabama and you get:

Chance to win multiple championships, more games, more exposure
Almost every game you play in is nationally televised
Best coach in the country
Best facilities in he country
Top notch training and medical attention

If you’re good, you go to the NFL plus you had a chance to make decent money. As much as if you went to UT? Maybe not, but you got coached by the best, played in more prime time games than at UT, etc.

But, remember, this isn’t just about football and basketball. The golfer gets to give lessons he or she otherwise would’ve had to do for free. The swimmer might do the same. The baseball player might be able to make some scratch. The women’s basketball star might get some money for working a summer camp.

Overall, if you believe in individualism, capitalism, free markets and freedom, this is a good thing, and much better than schools paying payers, which will never work. This is the fairest way to do it for all.

Making money for your likeness includes getting money for your autographs and taking selfies with boosters.

Unless I am mistaken, that kind of stuff already happens in most SEC schools so they aren’t really gaining anything with this, but other schools it might give a distinct advantage due to the deep pockets of say some SMU boosters or Au Austin lawyers.

If you think this ruling won’t change the dynamics of college recruiting you are sadly mistaken. It’s gonna be a whole new deal
