My flashlight dimmed slightly as my foot slid into the mud hole i was trying to avoid on my walk to the blind. Just what I wanted to find out on my trek through the pitch black wilderness, batteries are going out. They had just enough juice to get me to the pop-up blind I had so elegantly settled under a mysterious tree in the mud and water. The mystery part of the tree is that I couldn't identify the type of tree it was. Granted this was probably due to my lack of time and daylight, seeing as how it was 10pm when i happened upon the area with a clumsily opened pop-up blind and a half bag of corn to throw out. Setting aside my array of utilities i bend to unzip the blind and i feel i would have been quieter beating a gong in that moment. Its a surprise that the modern hunter shoots, let alone sees any game these days with the amount of zips and pops and velcro we use. Anyway, I squeeze myself in this blind and get set up with my bow, my chair and my back pack. In perspective, i'm 6'2" and a sporty 215 with a big upper body, big butt and rinky dink chicken legs. I've got my bow leaned on my right and my backpack right in front of me resting on the only dry spot i allotted myself in this blind. I'm not sure if they make a ground blind that is big enough for a person of my size to hunt in comfortably but if they do please recommend it. Also, for those that know where Devers, Tx is located, be aware. They are the home to the biggest spiders you could ever possibly fathom. If you've never seen a big guy dance his way out of a blind he barely fits in, with the elegance of a pack of hyenas in a meat market, it's entertaining to say the least. That spider was the size of my foot i swear, I know this because when i stepped on him he slapped my foot away. The scary part was that it was lying right on my camouflage backpack where it blended in quite well, the giveaway was that my pack had doubled in size and was staring at me.
If anyone has a recommendation for a bigger ground blind it would be appreciated, need some distance between me and these 8 legged people eaters.

Before leaving, I leave the windows in my blind open so that enough light gets in to discourage anything that creeps and crawls from taking up residence.
I'm also convinced that residue from my ThermaCell left on the inside has the same effect. However, whatever health hazards are created by using a ThermaCell in an enclosure I probably don't want to know.

No recommendations on a bigger blind but stick a hot shot pest strip in the blind next time. Nothing that breathes will be living for the next 4 months. I've been using these for years without fail. I have a blind with no windows in it and even the birds don't hang out there. http://www.hotshot.com/products/general-insect-control/no-pest-strip.aspx

I recommend checking out Barronett Blinds, they make some larger blinds.
I used to have one of their Big Mike models until cows stomped and chewed it to pieces (literally). I'm 6' and around 225, but my main reason for getting it at the time was because I mainly use traditional archery gear (recurves and longbows) which require more room to use than a compound bow. A lot of blinds are barely big enough to squat in making them useless for traditional archery, but this blind had plenty of room and I found it to be well-made (may it rest in peace).

Cabella's zone. I got one big enough for 3 full grown adults, chairs, packs, bows. Love it.

Too late this weekend unless you will be gone for a couple of weeks, but a few weeks before the season hang some pest strips in the area of the pop up, and one inside of it. After a few days the deer will start to ignore the smell.
