Hey all, I've been looking into getting into small game trapping, mainly squirrel and rabbit. I did some research on if its legal on public land around me and i cant find anything that explicitly says you can or cant. Ive read through the regulations several times. For the specific areas i am looking at is has a defined squirrel season with no defined means of take. It does not explicitly say trapping a legal or illegal means of take in those units for any species. I have found in some other units it has a defined trapping season listing furbearers and predators only. This is leading me to believe trapping is not a legal means of take. Ultimately i know i need to reach out to a game warden in the area but im hoping some of yall can shed light on this. Im specifically looking at areas in North Texas, Caddo National Grasslands, Tawakoni, Etc.

Thanks in advance

It is unlawful to use traps to hunt game birds or game animals in Texas. Squirrels are game animals, rabbits are non-game animals. I don't trap public land to I can't help you with that part of the question.

Well that’s unfortunate but thanks for that. I didn’t realize they were considered game animals.
