Yes, it's that time of the year when you find yourself trying to remember if there's anything you missed that should have been done before the season opener.

I remember the Friday morning on year before the season opener when I went out and hit the start switch on my ATV only to hear that dreaded "click". I felt sure I had run it a month or two earlier but it must have been sitting idle a lot longer than I thought. Now I find myself making a list days in advance of everything that I need to check and the stuff I need to take to avoid those last-minute surprises or leaving something behind.

So with all this in mind, let's see how many we can catch with this poll...

Yesterday I was looking at 4 footlockers of hunting crap I've accumulated. I try to remember how my dad hunted. He was too busy working his butt off to support a family to plan ahead for a hunting trip. He'd put on a coat, throw some extra .30-30 cartridges and some paper towels to wipe his ... in it, grab the Marlin and off he'd go.

And I bet he owned zero camo.

Other than my bowhunting suits I would own zero camo if you could still find quality gear in olive drab or dark khaki. I do like the fact that camo clothes hide blood stains really well.

It’s like we only have two options now, you either look like your straight out of the real tree catalog or you look like the brawny paper towel guy.

As a kid (donkey's years ago), I was fretting that I had everything ready for the opening of the season. I asked the old man to go over my gear with me to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything.

He simply looked at me and asked if I had my gun. Of course. Ammo? Dad... License? Yessir. Knife. Nod.

"What else do you need?" was the final question. That chat has been my basic yardstick for every trip I've made hunting anywhere ever since.

And don't think that the ONE time I forgot my rifle ammo (years later) that I didn't replay this conversation in my head!

Now, I just show up. Sometimes in shorts and tennis shoes.

I do need to find my heaters and buy propane bottles.

Deer are never where I expect them.

My ATV has been in shop 2 months waiting on fuel pump. May be done this week.

I own zero camo. Never bought into the camo fad. Jeans, long sleeve shirt, and hunters orange is how I get down. Maybe camo helps, maybe it doesn't ... either way, I've never had an issue not using camo.

I'm not a camo guy either, with only a pullover or two and that's it. I use carhartt stuff in dull colors.

I have containers that I keep my hunting/lease stuff in ready to go. Just need to pack food and meds and hit the road. But the wife just informed me she isn't going so now I have that...

I keep most of my stuff for geneal deer hunting in a day pack, I keep the magazine in the rifle full of rounds and I normally have a spare to everything in the bag inside my truck so I’m good to go. I’ve forgotten my ammo once and the full magazine saved me.

On my serous trips, I have a few Plano foot lockers packed with all my gear that I will run thru twice to make sure I got everything, as finding out you forgot it may not be feasible to get a replacement. Never fails though I always forget something.

Since I put my gear in my truck just prior to bow season and leave it there, it’s just a matter of taking out the bow/archery gear (in 2 dryboxes) out and putting ammunition in my pack. My rifle also stays in my truck unless I go to D/FW.

I bought my license right before season this year. I actually do see the day coming when that will slip my mind. smile

I feel certain that late Friday night or early Saturday morning in at least one Texas deer camp, someone will be asking around if anyone has a spare one of these...

You,d be surprised how much you can sell a can of snuff for on a moose hunt in Alaska when your 50 miles from the nearest light switch!!

Thanks, Billy

Lol I used to smoke. Last sheep hunt in the Yukon I miscounted my cigarette packs (thought I had one more pack than I actually did). When I discovered it I had 3 days to go and 5 cigarettes left.

I came awful dang close to using the Sat phone and paying to have the air charter service bring me a couple packs. The outfitter said that it’s been done more than once. shocked

I think the most important thing is breaking up your silhouette... I keep that camp burlap around the stand which conceals our legs and torso.... So I usually wear wranglers and a Camo jacket and tobogin if it's cold.

Wasn't opening weekend but I was supposed to go on a four day weekend hunt (deer, dove and quail) outside of Big Wells.
The day before and the morning of the day I was supposed to leave everything fell apart on many different levels. I wanted to get gone soo bad I didn't double check everything as I was tossing stuff in the truck.
Get to the lease late. Get up to go hunt in the morning only to discover the bag with all my ammo was at the house. 3 different deer rifles; 7 mm Mag, .30-30 and .30-06. and everyone else was shooting .243s and/or .270s so no one had spare ammo for me.

I keep a plastic ammo box in my truck and use it to store a box of ammo in every caliber I shoot for that very reason.

Over 600 views of this thread and yet only 47 responses to the poll. That tells me there's likely a lot of you who haven't bought your new license and refuse to let it be known.

I'm a odd caliber kinda guy, so years ago I learned have ammo in the case with the rifle! In the mid-80s went to Llano with my "new to me" 6.5x55 Swede, NO one in that County had any ammo for it! Luckily I had my 35 Remington Marlin with me with 3 rounds in it. I loaded my hunting backpack into my truck this past weekend, it will stay in my truck until spring.
