I posted this in the Gun Dogs section but wanted to share it here as an indication of how sport hunting has evolved through the decades in Texas.

I found this photo on social media and wanted to share it here.

Not taking sides, it was what is was and now is what it is.

Great picture! I remember when the state finally shut down running deer with dogs in the last few remaining east Texas counties. Them boys were PISSED! A customer of ours, Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative (San Augustine) had a shop/maintenance manager (glorified mechanic) that was so mad he couldn't spit.

I'm not taking sides either. It's a brutal way to hunt deer, but man has been doing it that way for quite a few centuries.

My uncle was president of a local "Wolf Hunters Association" for their county back in the 50's and into the mid 60's. There had not been a wolf in that county for a very long time so they hunted coyotes with dogs. He had a large kennel of dogs that he bred, sold and hunted with. I was there once when he had a father and son drive down from Tenn or Kentucky IIRC to buy some of his dogs. He was proud of his dogs and took good care of them.

Is that some sort of observation post/blind out the top of that panel wagon in the far right back? Very cool.

As a child I can remember sitting around the campfire with my grandfather and other old men listening to their hounds run coyotes, bs’ing, and passing a whiskey bottle. I don’t remember them ever killing one, they just listened to them run and then called them in with the horn.

It’s a cool memory now, but at the time I actually thought it was pretty boring.

Yes, telling lies has always been a hunting ritual, no matter the game.

It was a time when men needed something to hunt because like ourselves, it was in their blood. With no deer in the area, they hunted whatever Mother Nature offered them.

Wow, that's a lot of folks with a lot of hounds. The site where that photo would have been taken is about 15 miles from where I live.

Looks like it was quite the organization back in the day. All there is around here now are (mostly irresponsible) hog doggers. I've got a Black Mouth Cur (hog dog) sitting outside my home as I type this. Showed up here about 10 days ago now. No one looking for it apparently, no one responding to a facebook posting of it.

Nice dog actually. But is going to have to go to the animal shelter Monday if no one claims her. They will put her down almost immediately I imagine.

Notice all the men on horses (or mules since it's not easy to tell) on the last row. No ATV's in those days. Yes, it was a time when a man might not consider having his picture taken without his horse or mule under or beside him.

Not sure but maybe a horseman played a specific role in the hunt. I know the typical fox hunt was much more about the chase rather than the harvest. Maybe the job of the horseman was to ride ahead and somehow keep the race going because everyone else sat around the fire and told lies.

Or maybe it was his job to round up the hounds after the chase ended for some reason.

Combination of both I would think. A good riding mule was as highly prized as most horses. Good stamina, sure footed.

Back then a Horse's, Mule's, Dog's pedigree and performance were things to be proud of. That was as much a part of the sport and camaraderie as anything.

This true. You might expect a lesser fight if you insulted a man over his wife than his horse or mule.

My family is from Louisiana and some of my earliest memories are of being taken on hunts where they were running deer with dogs along with other memories of us at camp tending to the dogs. Later in life, my grandfather told us many hunting stories from those days; interesting times.

Never used hounds on a Fox but I did get invited to Louisiana to Deer hunt with dogs. I didn't know that was what we were going to do and brought a 25-06 rifle instead of a shotgun with buckshot. I caught mortal heck about it and was the brunt of many a joke the night before the first hunt. I asked to be dropped off on a know crossing and let everyone else go run the dogs. They said no as they wanted me to see and hear the race. It was a wild and noisy event and I ended up being the only person that morning that got a shot. That buck is shoulder mounted in my shop, a nice 20" 8 point from back in 1979.

It was common to see guys carrying a 30-30 or semi-auto when I started deer hunting in Mississippi as a teenager, including the times when I was on deer drives. I knew guys who were so good with a rifle they could hit a deer crossing a logging road with dogs pushing it. You have to keep in mind that even when being chased, deer will periodically stop to look behind them. You just have to be quick with your aim and pulling the trigger. While I'm not near as good a shot as those back then, I've taken deer in East Texas when they stopped for a few seconds when being chased by coyotes.

Notice too how several are in dress attire. Could be wrong but I suspect that had its roots from fox hunting being a sport of the elite in the Mother Land.

Yes, "Trig" and "July" were words often spoken (in the context of dogs) in those days that are as rare today as conservative democrats, which were also common back then.

Something must have happened prior to December 8th, 1941 that caused a large drop in the turnout.

Great photo and thanks for posting. I have a LIFE magazine from December 7, 1936 covering the South Texas Wolf Hunters Association meet held on the Story Ranch at Cotulla. My Great Uncle is in a couple of the photographs and I know that my Grandfather is in a group photo, just too many to tell.
I think that they had over 800 hounds and over 1,500 attendees that year. The event was so big that LIFE and TIME both sent reporters down to cover the event. In the early 70's, I would skip school and camp with the hunters on the Waggoner Ranch near Gillette. Those were fun times and most everyone in attendance was over 70 years old. The largest cast I ever saw was 264 dogs.
Adios,
Gary

I remember the name, Hinkle Schillings. I think he attended the South Texas Wolf Hunters meet when I was there. I do know that he was well known as a breeder of some really nice dogs.
There are still a lot of running dogs in South Texas that are used for bobcat. They cross a little "potlicker" blood into them to give them a little "tree". My folks ran American Foxhounds or "running walkers" as known to the locals.
Adios,
Gary

The walking table in the first pic is cool. If you have never seen them walk the dog it’s quiet a sight. And no, not with a Zara spook. In the book Where The Red Fern Grows Billy walks his Little Ann down the table and wins.
