I have only tried calling a few times on my lease but I am limited to my area only. How would you approach this during deer season and while deer hunting in the morning and evening?

Would you just wait until after you are finished hunting that morning and setup the caller and decoy or maybe something mid day? I usually hear multiple packs calling just before first light in the morning and they seem to be fairly close to my area.

Thanks for any input..

I'm new to it so this may be a bad idea but the last couple of seasons, on morning deer hunts I wait until the time I would normally get out of the blind, then call for 15-30 minutes. I never call during afternoon hunts.

I have turned my call on a bunch of times during a deer hunt just to see what the deer do. Almost every single time they look toward the blind for a second and go back to eating.

I’d rather kill coyotes than deer. So I call every chance I get, deer season or not, doesn’t bother me.

Saw a coyote at about 07/15 am Saturday am, as I’m
sitting in deer stand skirting to the north east. Hit the mouth call that Timbertoes made for me years ago, came in on a string. Took it at about 40 yards. Was fun!!

I had one Saturday morning about 8am. Was stalking the deer at the feeder. O shot I’m in the [censored] and he did the front leg shuffle about 80 yards away from my feeder. Didn’t ruin the hunt and only 2 of the 7 deer left the feeder.

My efforts are paying off, I am seeing rabbits again for the first time in 3 years

I have a lot of coyotes on my property. Boggles my mind to hear them yapping close by and to see the deer unphased by the noise.

It really shouldn't. When you think about it, what are the deer going to do? They can't spend their entire lives running and hiding every time they hear sound of a predator. Deer and most other animals are all about what is going on in their immediate vicinity and right now. A yapping yipping coyote somewhere else, is no threat to the deer. The calls just tell the deer that there are coyotes in the area and even how far away that they are. This is no surprise to the deer as they are often in the same area as coyotes.

The coyote only becomes a threat when it gets too close and even then, deer may not spook if it isn't acting aggressively.

This is my opinion on coyotes and deer. Some or all may disagree and that is fine but being a cattleman, I spend lots of time in the outdoors among the wild species that inhabit my ranch and have witnessed interspecies interaction for many years.

Coyotes are a part of the deer's natural world. In my experience, coyote howls and barks are of little interest to most deer. Coyotes have a different body posture when simply traveling as opposed to being on the hunt. A deer, most prey animals really, will pick up on that difference and react accordingly when that coyote is perceived to be a threat. I was hunting one of my places several years back and was watching a young, non shooter, 8 point and two does on the feeder. All three of the deer suddenly threw their heads up and looked back to the east of my blind. I looked in that direction and there was a mature coyote trotting in their direction. They didn't run but did continue to watch the coyote's approach. I eased the rifle out the east window and dropped the coyote, fully expecting to scare off the deer. The sound of the shot startled the deer and they jumped and trotted off maybe 30' from the feeder. They all spun around and looked back at the coyote, not at the blind where the shot came from, for a minute then walked straight back to the feeder and continued their evening meal. YMMV but when deer hunting or not, if a coyote shows his sneaky self and presents me with a shot, I will take it every time. I have fed way too many veal buffets to coyotes over the years and will not pass up a chance to pop one.

My hierarchy of things that die on my place -

1a) Hogs - shoot on site regardless of messing up other hunting - we don't have a lot, and I want to keep it that way
1b) Coyotes - shoot on site regardless of messing up other hunting - we have a LOT
2) Deer - AR legal buck, and then a doe, but I am pretty selective
3) Tom Turkey and maybe a hen on occasion
4) Skunk - shoot on site if it won't hurt my hunt
5) Raccoon - sometimes I shoot, but mostly trap - we have a lot

I killed two yotes since opening morning and will shoot every yote I can regardless of season, time of day or my intended target.

My hierarchy of things that die at the deer lease is the same as Dalroo - pigs, coyotes, and bobcats get top priority regardless - if that ruins the deer hunt so be it.

Hogs dogs and cats must die and in no particular order, I shoot them when I am hunting every time I see one.

Bar-D's remarks on body posture are spot on. You can act like a silly wobbly goose out in the field and deer will often stare at you. Hunch down with eyes forward and they will be gone gone.

I carry my 22 mag to the blind most of the time along with deer rifle. The 22 mag will dispatch a varmint or pig and really not bother the deer. Last time I hunted I decided not to carry because no one had been seeing pigs. Well 14 piglets and 2 sows showed up right at dark. I quit shooting after 3 shots because I was running low on 30-06 ammo. I will carry the 22 mag next time I hunt.I would have emptied the clip that evening. [Linked Image]
