Lots of discussion a few days ago about how tough the Nosler 120 gr Ballistic Tip is in a 7-08. Can I assume the 140 Ballistic Tip is "tougher" (better penetration and less blow-up) because of additional weight and a higher sectional density, or is there something magical about the 120 that the 140 doesn't have?

The 140 isn't any tougher. In fact, when Nosler decided to "toughen up" the .284 120BT they took the 140 BT jacket and basically just cut it off from the top, shortening it to it's present length, resulting in jacket walls that are overall thicker at the top than the previous version. Made it much more durable. It is a very tough bullet, surprisingly so actually.

Longhorn74,
I think youll love the 7-08. Like others have said, its just about the perfect Texas deer and hog round. Ive always used 139 and 140 grain bullets with much satisfaction. I like the 7-08 so much that I have two of them!

Update on the ruger hawkeye 7mm-08 I bought in June. I finally took it out to the range yesterday and the rifle is a tack driver at 100 yards. It shot in a 1/2” moa with in 6 rounds. Glad now I purchased that rifle.

Nice, congrats on a good purchase. I have a 7mm-08 as well, I think you'll be more than happy with its performance on game, even at longer ranges.
