Been a while since we had a thread on the ones that got away.

Here are the ones from my former low fence 59 acre honey hole (now has a housing development on it bang) that that still keep me up at night.

Let’s see yours...

I got pics of this guy my first year on my first lease and I thought I hit the jackpot but he was a unicorn for this area and way better than what we see 99% of the time. Still my best deer to have on camera.

I didn’t know you didn’t have it any more. Your lease was probably the most prized place in NTX to many. That’s more saddening then chasing deer giants frown

Sorry man.

Hell, redsnake I'm curious to see the ones that didn't get away. Very cool genetics you had there.

Mine was painful because I watched him for 5 mins waiting for a shot. Only to have him bolt after 2 doe......I regret not taking a shot, because I was waiting for the perfect shot.

We knocked down some good ones over the years but no true giants like we had on game cams. My favorite is a true 160” 8 pt my daughter got the last year we hunted it before we sold it

I’ve only had one that I would say truly “ got away”

Two years ago I saw a mule deer feeding in a flat about 1/2-3/4 mile away. Walked over to him lost sight of him, he ended up winding me. No worries I thought, I’ll back out of here and come get him in a few days when the incoming storm blows thru.

New guy on the lease shows up the afternoon I get back and is joyriding thru the same pasture and whacks him chasing a doe.

Scored 175”.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Back in the flip phone days I was hunting a public land special rifle elk season that ran concurrent with a general deer season... the catch was if you possessed an elk tag you could not harvest a deer in that area during the dates of your hunt.

Needless to say I saw ZERO elk... I saw nearly a dozen different mature bucks and then glassed up a very large double drop tine buck that was bigger than anything I had seen alive on the hoof. He proceeded to walk over an whip another buck that would've been a shooter any day of the week. Because I had nothing to take pics with I sat down and called a buddy to see if he would bail me out...

Amazing to see an animal like that on the hoof.

I've since returned several times to that area and never seen anything like him again.

Mule deer? I saw a mule deer like that trailing a doe, but it was on our neighbors land, plus the season was already over.

Its been a long time since I have posted pics on here so I do not know how to anymore. I have pics of both deer but they arent the best. When I think of truly big deer I have seen in the wild 2 come to mind. One I actually got a shot at with my bow and missed at 30 yards.

The one I missed was on a Thanksgiving evening 8 or 9 years ago. It was on a place I no longer hunt in Callahan County but did hunt it for many years. I killed two deer over 155 off of this place. This paticular deer we never got on camera before this and never got another picture after I missed him. He came in chasing a group of does, who knows how far away he was from "home." He came in and wouldnt stand still, he was all over the place. Finally he stopped broadside at 30 yards and I rushed the shot. Went right over the top of his back and he ran off another 40 yards and just stood there for a few minutes and then proceeded to chase the does. I was sick and was really wishing I would have had a rifle with me. They disappered into the brush and I never saw him again.

The other deer I watched 3 or 4 different times in the city limits of Abilene 4 years ago. He was a stud. Never saw him the following year. I dont know if he died of old age or if he got pushed out. There is a pretty large population of deer where he was at in that part of town.

Langtry area. It was the most majestic animal I've ever seen.
