Hello guys, I'll be in the market for a new pup after the season. I've had labs in the past but am thinking I want something different this go around. I mostly duck hunt but wouldnt mind doing some more quail and pheasant hunting. I'm thinking either a German short hair, German wire hair, or a weimaraner.
What are yalls thoughts? Anyone have experience with any of these breeds as a hybrid pointer/retriver?

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Golden Retriever. If main focus is retrieving with a little upland on the side.

I was in the same boat a few years ago. After tons of research I narrowed it down to GWP and pudelpointer. They are functionally very similar to each other. Main diffs I read often are that the GWP tend to be aggressive towards other dogs and PPs are relatively quick learners, so I went with a PP. At least in my case I can't be happier and I've heard the same from every other hunter that has one.
Good luck no matter which way you go.

Pudelpointer all the way!
I'm hard core lab guy but I will have a PP at some point.

if you're interested in a top notch dog that can retrieve game (feathers and fur), point upland game, and even blood tracking then look into a Deutsch Drathaar. I have one and am training another for a family friend currently. Ive shot a 5 man limit of ducks in the morning and shot quail over the same dog in the same day. She has also done a bit of blood tracking but we are still working on that. I grew up with some really great labs but these dogs are really special hunting and family dogs given the proper training.

I have a Flat-coated retriever on his 8th season, by far one of the best all round dogs you can get. I have a new pup that is a Gold-ador, half golden retriever and half lab. Full sister to my pup is a hell of a dog already. Both parents are hunting stock

I love my golden but wife doesn't love his hair. I'll look hard at Boykins the next dog. Don't let their size fool you- I've duck hunted with two fantastic ones, and they're flushers.

Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.

So many awesome breeds to choose from. It really boils down to your hunting style and makeup as well as your ability to manage the requirements of the particular breed, exercise/grooming/trainability/health concerns. You can get anything from a 20 pound cocker up to a 100+ pound retreiver.
What ratio do you hunt waterfowl to upland?
Do you want a pointer or a flusher?
Are you going to train or get professionally trained?
How many days and where geographically do you hunt now, and will you be hunting more or less than that over the next 10 years?
Shorthaired breeds have their benefits and downsides, the same goes for double coated longer haired breeds.
I personnally want the smallest body size of any breed that gets the job done for my hunting style and ability to be exposed to a multitude of hunting situations. I would rather have a well mannered family dog that can go everywhere with me and that is a good hunter rather than some ribbon winning dog that can only be in a kennel. To each their own and best of luck finding the new addition.

It's such a huge misconception that trial/test dogs can't be great family dogs.
No reason you can't have the best hunting partner out there that excels in both tests/trials and being a family pet.

It isn't a misconception. Don't get upset. I am sure all your dogs are wonderful. All test/trial dogs are great in the house.

It is a huge misconception and I find typically it's those who just want an excuse for why their dog isn't very good., There is no reason someone can't have an amazing test/trial dog and family companion. The idea that you have to choose between the two is false.

Mainly duck hunting + family dog = Labrador.
You can train a lab to hunt quail and pheasant. No they won't necessarily perform like some of the others - but in the duck blind the others wont necessarily perform like a lab either.
It's a give and take and you cannot beat the personality of a lab for a family dog. IMO.

But they really are the best breed for a duck hunting and family dog. They make fine flushing dogs as well. A lot of the pheasant outfitters in South Dakota and Kansas use labs where the birds are thick.

if you're serious about getting a drahthaar talk to Eric Turibio at uberhutte kennels in Winnie Texas. Look into all the testing and training that goes into making drahts such a great breed. You'll find that most draht breeders strongly encourage you to test your dogs for at least the first 2 test.

There is no best breed,
Simply a matter of whats dog gets hunted the most.
Doesn’t matter what dog you use. If you duck hunt a dog and it gets 1k bird retrieves a year, breed is irrelevant. Watched an ol chessie out mark and retrieve a MH lab.
Same with upland I hunted an ol’lab cross that would out point and hold several titled/certificate’d pointers. But that dog also hunted 100 plus days a year, although those dogs help lots of titles, they didn’t get used much after their titles.
Get what you want. No right answer.
